Congratulations Toughbook Rick
4000 posts and still going strong
Here is a response that I sent to the Top guy here on NBR, Andrew
He was congratulating me on my new responsibilities as moderator
He made a comment that he had noticed an improvement in the last few months
My reply to him
Few months you say
Try a few years!
Rick (Toughbook) has really put an effort in to his section for the last few years
The Panasonic forum section was totally boring before his contributions
Up to three years ago I read posts here, but the theme was all wrong
Ricks interest in modding the Toughbooks got the ball rolling
And it was contagious
And now NBR has a wealth of information on our forum pages
I belonged to a German Toughbook forum years ago as it was the only great source of information
That forum now links to us Andrew
Thats really something
The credit go's out to Rick here
He has made the Panasonic section what it is today
It is the most popular Toughbook forum in the world

Without Rick's external wifi antenna mod, I wouldn't have joined the forum. But since he started modding stuff, I figured this was the place to hang out, and I gave it a shot too.
Now I'm mostly off doing other things, but I do still check in once in a while. -
Aww shucks... I'm just a cheerleader and referee when needed (VERY rarely)... You guys are the brains...
Thanks for the kind words though. There are a lot of others that make this place happen and make it fun. Just look in any sticky around. -
I have noticed the change. I have been lurking since i got my first toughbook, but just bookmarked the site because it was just so-so. Fast forward a couple of years and the wealth of info here is amazing.

I picked my basic shell of a CF-28 with only a good mobo, battery, keyboard and screen last May or June. Friends and fellow firefighters hear how I "built" this impressive (yes, this legacy hardware is still something that most people have never seen before) machine and some of the mods I'm doing. "You're going to what with the what now?" I might as well be putting a flux capacitor in a Delorean. I would have never been able to do this without this site.
As far as this being the most popular in the world, I have to take exception. My living room is the top forum and the top poster is my wife. Some of her most popular posts include:
1. Is that the last thing you need for that computer?
2. Can you put that computer away and paint the bathroom?
3. Why are taking that computer apart again - I thought it was done?
4. What's a Globalsat GPS antenna? We were charged for one on the VISA bill. (LOCKED)
5. You told me you weren't going spend more money on stupid things like the GPS (LOCKED)
6. Why do you keep locking out our conversations? (LOCKED) -
definitly the best source of toughbook information on the net, someone on here always has the answers , i've learnt a lot reading through the posts

Without this forum my cat would never have had her own laptop.
I lurked too for a year just to read everything I could before plunging into the world of Toughbooks. It's a very useful forum indeed. -
Any time you do a search for toughbook info this site is the only place to go.
No other sites have info.
Without this forum I would have never been given a free CF-28 and took it apart to replace the screen etc. -
This forum got me to the point I thought I would never reach as far as modding laptops is concerned. I have learned a tremendous amount and continue to do so seemingly every time I log in and monitor. While I will never be able to attain the Yoda level of geekiness that some of the more profound members of this forum have, it is still a "great bunch of fun"! I have been able to take parts machines and remove and replace as necessary and sell them to people from all over the US (and beyond). My hat is off to those that advise us everyday and for allowing me to be a part of a great group of people that all have a love for our Toughbooks! Here's to the next 4000 posts!

This is the place to be!
Rick has been a huge inspiration to me. I found this forum about two years ago and began reading and reading. Every time I would do a search with a question using Google this was the place with the answer 9 times out of 10! I have to mention Modly too for hosting alot of the horsepower needed to get your rig a going.
I started with a CF-27 and have moved up to a CF-28 and could not have had more fun building.I have evolved through 3 CF-28's to date. I have been able to install the GPS mod successfully, XP, Atheros WiFi, 7200 rpm seagate HD, swapped out keyboards, installed a mobile docking station in my truck and much more. I am now building up a 1 Ghz CF-28 for a friend. All of this made possible by the many great people here on the on this forum, and their willingness to share their knowledge and guidance.
THANK YOU ALL -
This forum is indeed the best Pana Toughbook forum around. It is because of this forum I know as much as I do about the Toughbook series! Thanks guys!

It's somewhat amazing to me that ToughBook owners have to be the king of the geeks in the laptop world yet there's a dearth of websites dedicated to coverage of ToughBooks. But hey, happy so many people found a place here and there's definitely something to be said about flocking to a crowd and going where the strongest knowledge base is, and that's here! Kudos to everyone that participates for making this little corner of the web the most resourceful for TB owners.

One more observation I'll make about this particular forum, I'm sure a lot of guys here are those that are very hands-on and may have jobs that involve working in the field, probably more testosterone than average. And so I find it strange the number of cat avatars and references to owning cats showing up. I don't understand why there would be a correlation between owning cats and a ToughBook, but it appears that way.
-
Andrew... Keen observation... Tomcat and I were just talking about that the other day... I said something about cats and he pointed that out too. Perhaps it is a "King of the Jungle" thing?
Too funny... -

:LOL - my cat avatar has nothing to do with cat ownership ( I am not currently owned by ANY cat) - I just always thought it was funny as he!!, so when it came time to change my avatar (out of boredom, mostly) there it went.
I HAVE been owned by cat(s) in the past; (no matter WHAT people tell you, it's really THEIR world - we just live in it) but I am blissfully fur-free for the time being. I've also had dogs: my first died when I was 15, grandma always said we were "littermates".
In general, dogs are not as independent; they will take a lot more crap from their people (more than is good for them, in many cases) whereas a cat will get up and leave. This, I think, is probably the reason some people love them and some hate them - it's easy to love an animal that gives unconditional love (like most dogs); it's quite a different matter when you know that if you treat them crappy enough, they might not be there waiting for you when you come home.
As for being hands-on - yeah... I do get into the nuts & bolts of things much more than most; I am in fact an on-site repair tech by trade, so I'm definitely out standing in my field...
mnem<~~~ NOT running LINUX for Kitties on his Toughbook ~~~<<< -
I will agree, this is a great forum, and I've been spending a lot of time lurking here and learning. It popped up while I was searching for something last year, and was quickly bookmarked. -
Congratulation's Rick I'm glad to see you are still going strong. -
I will tell you guys now that I have no idea what i would do without this place. My only regret is not being able to contribute more. One day I will get there.
My hat is off to Rick for his non stop helping nature. Now that Alex is a Moderator it is only going to get better.
Cats? yummy! Taste just like chicken I promise. -
Someone said to me the other day
You like Cats ? ..........Good lets exchange recipes
Alex -
I have that on a T-shirt actually, annoys my neighbors to NO end
-
I have to admit I like the cat avatars - I have two cats at home . . . and yes they own me, both boys and won't let me take a shower in the morning before I feed them! . . . They are seemingly far wiser than people give them credit, If you don't do their biding . . they'll jump all over your expensive equipment or puke fur balls over you clothes ! :/
-
I actually don't mind cats. We had a Siamese it seems like my whole childhood. She was a cool cat. I would take a cat over that little **** Jack Russell Terrior my wife has. Talk about a pain in the !
Sorry for getting off topic. Were kinda good at that. -
I bought a cf-27 on ebay for .99 cents, found this forum and the rest is history.
Thank You All
