I've been wondering about this empty slot on the right side of my cf-29. its got a black wire with a gold 90 degree elbow inside. i've read that i could put a couple diffrent things in there, but i don't know what they would do for my computer. can someone please explain.

Let me guess. You have a CF-29HTM50BM. There are two slots there for PCMCIA cards. You can do all kinds of things with 'em. Others can answer better then myself on that.
The cable is routed to the the gold connector (pass through) visible if you slide the little door open in the back. It's an antenna lead.
Do yourself a favor and use Azrial's search engine gizmo. I have it saved in the toolbar and will drag you a link. TEST site:forum.notebookreview.com/panasonic - Google Search
There ya go. Just replace the word TEST with PCMCIA CF-29 or whatever. Have fun. That was my first question on the board by the way.

As Jeff mentioned, it is obvious that you have one of the retired SBC CF-29 Mk3 units:

    CF-29HTM50BM Original Configuration
    *** SBC ONLY ***
Pentium M 738-1.4GHz LV (Centrino), 13.3" XGA Transmissive Touch Screen, 512MB RAM, 40GB HDD, Intel 802.11 a+b+g WLAN, Windows XP Pro SP2, Tempo VIP Sidekick Tester/ADSL Loop Validator Media Bay Interface, Sony-Ericsson GC83 EDGE WWAN, SBC Logo, Asset tag, Replaceable RJ11 Jack

The cable shown above is half of the connection between the original Sony-Ericsson GC83 WWAN card and the pull-up antenna located on the left side of the screen lid.

There is a pigtail that inserts into the WWAN card and snaps into the gold connector of your cable:

( NOTE: The above shows a Sierra AirCard 860 instead of the OEM Sony-Ericsson GC83, but the pigtail is illustrative of the one originally in the SBC CF-29HTM50BM)

If you do not intend to connect to wireless broadband you can just ignore the cable and use the CardBus slots for other PC Card or CardBus cards.

If you have a HTM50 you have two slots. Some of them come with a black retainer plate to keep some yahoo from stealing your broadband card but the ten that I have seen also had a 2 1/2" pigtail. That will be behind the retainer plate. Pull two screws the plate falls out, push the button on the broadband card and it comes out. There is a slot for a sim card in it.
This is my best guess if you only see one slot. :)

    How'm I doing?

As far as using broadband I am away up it the boonies and don't use it. I stick with wireless off my WLAN. Check out definitions of WLAN and WWAN. That will help. Other units have a broadband mounted on a sled. This slides in above the battery. You won't have that with a stock HTM50.

    Hang in there.

In computing, PC Card (originally PCMCIA Card) is the form factor of a peripheral interface designed for laptop computers...
Trust me on this; you have two 32-bit CardBus slots in your unit.
There is a difference between "Wireless Local Area Network" ( WLAN) and "Wireless Wide Area Network" ( WWAN), aka: Wireless Broadband or Wireless Internet).

Are you paying an Internet service provider to connect your laptop directly to the Internet (exclusive of your home Internet access) when you are away from home?

"Read my sig" ;) ; I have three of the retired SBC Mk3 CF-29HTM50BM units: I'm typing this on one of them now. :)

so it basically has to do with internet alone, right? i cant put a card in there to get more "storage" space? what i want to do with this computer is for music, internet, some ballistic programs (and all-around beating things).
