Came across a little slidy trap door on the bottom of my CF-18 today.
What is this unit installed in it?

There is also an IMEI number on the bottom - is that related? Does it have some kind of 3G modem in it?

One further question - I can't find the sticker with the model number on it. How can I find out which MK mine is?

    Here is the spec:

It is a docking station port. The big one is for the computer and the little round ones are antenna connections. You can find your full model number on the first page of the bios. press F2 as the machine is booting.

    Thanks for that.

Unfortunately the BIOS is passworded. I've tried all kinds of passwords but never managed to get in

Then I am afraid we can't help you. Discussion of bios passwords is strictly forbidden in this forum.

I don't know if Panasonic PC Info is available for CF-18, or maybe already installed. If I remember correctly, it can give you your model #.

YES, the PC information viewer app will work on the CF-18. It WILL provide the full model number.

Blair (toughasnails) should be able to get you new rubber feet for your CF-18 too... Might want those as they're cheap :)

Yep, it has to be a mk 4 or 5. If that program won't work for you go into device manager and see if you have TPM. If it does it's a mk5, if not, mk4.

Yeah... I've had to put a new one of them in.

    That worked - it's a MK4.

So, one last question.... why does it have an IMEI number - thought that was for mobile phones? I don't see anywhere a SIM card would go.

You will have to look in device manager (if it is active in bios) or pull the bottom of the unit to see if you have a wwan card on the daughterboard.

Look on the mic/head phone jack area and the SIM slot will be there. Also you must have an extra button switch at the front right handside area if WWAN still exist.

The WWAN versions I have had were Sprint and Verizon. They have the ID number sticker on the bottom without a sims card slot. I don't think the Cingular / AT&T ones have that sticker on the bottom, but do have the sims card slot.

Hey toughbook owners, is this true that you can't put more than 1GB stick in the CF-18? Or you can put 2GB stick?

Correct....the base (soldered on the mobo) memory is either 256MB or 512MB with a maximum additional stick of 1GB in the spare slot.

I'll take the opportunity to say that the CF-18 (as with all Fully Rugged models) operate in environments that kill other notebooks....so, limitations & benefits are in abundance. :D

:) Yes, the CPU is soldered hence the higher IP rating.

SLOWmance ....I've never heard of Usain Bolt winning a Marathon, if you don't make the finish line, how would you rate the performance?

Technically WWAN module is just a mobile phone without all the unnecessary parts (battery, screen, keyboard etc). Most of the time talk feature is disabled but some of them can send/receive SMS messages if suitable software is installed.

Ah, OK - you'll have to excuse me - I don't really know too much about these machines.

    The model number is CF-18KH2ZXB4

    Thanks - very interesting.

    What does:
"dual ant. conn. - Hazard. Location "
    mean?

dual antenna connectors - turn it over and you can see them, for the dock

Hazard. Location - has a special battery and the doors has a lock / screws to keep it shut

Dual Antenna Connectors: The connectors on your unit mate with the connectors in a car dock or desktop port replicator to give external antennas for wwan or gps etc.

Hazard Location: The HDD & Battery doors have secondary screws as well as the normal latches, it prevents the HDD or Battery falling out if the door opens on impact.

EDIT: toughasnails is quicker on the draw. :)
