Thanks that answers why it wont work. So to have a 2nd drive I can only use an IDE drive, I think I'll just stick to a flash drive or a portable hdd then.

    IDE-SSD would be an option.

I've tried the aftermarket adapters a couple times. No joy. Better off building it yourself.

In my photos there is a set-up for an internal USB+GPS. Lives where the sled normally resides.

    Two screws to access this.

More pictures. It fell on the floor and disgorged it's innards....might as well take a picture.

That board might fit up in a floppy drive caddy. Did someone try this several years ago? IMG_0322.JPG IMG_0320.JPG

    If someone was handy enough,
He could get a M.2 or MSATA to usb adapter and connect it to the usb port for the WWAN sled.
The entire setup would fit on the sled where the WWAN card was.
Maybe a M.2 to MSATA adapter would plug in and work on the WWAN sled. Works on some other Touhghbook WWAN slots.

Hit and miss in the orig hard drive bay.
Not very reliable in my experience a few years back. I had several of them " in the day"
The usb options of msata or m.2 to usb seem more reliable to me.

I read somewhere of a guy who took the board out of 2 ssd's and then trimmed the caddy foam. Fit both drives in the caddy. One went to the standard hdd interface and the 2nd went to a usb port via an adapter.

Thanks for that toughasnails. Am I correct in assuming he we know about this because his username is linked?

I'm sure something like that could work, my issue is I'm not as steady as I used to be so I'd be shaking and fumbling drives and connectors.

Yes..top right in Alerts. It will show when he logs ins. Rick knows theses 28's and 29's inside out. At one time he did this full time selling fully maxed out Toughbooks.

Just popping in to say hello, between working (both at work and at home maintaining things) and the internet not working where I live very regularly I haven't been online much.

I have done a coupe of experiments with the CF29 and am really impressed with how usable these old machines still are. I have a micro sd card reader which I have installed various OSs on and it works a treat. No HDD, just this little reader with a 16GB micro sdhc card running OSs like Linux, FreeDOS, Windows XP. Set the BIOS to boot to the USB and your off and running. The only problem with this setup is the rear door doesn't shut. I would really like one of these because the rear door would be able to shut and it would look bog stock.

I am also now looking for another Toughbook (fully rugged) with much more modern specs like an Intel i series CPU. Any recommendations?
