I work in sites often at the end of construction and theft is high in these sites. Want a cable that clamps onto a surface like counter or pole or something sturdy. If it has a alarm that is even better.

Where can I find a insert that can be plugged into the power port that allows the strain of the cable when pulled to transfer it from the black plastic cover of the DC plug to the black housing of the toughbook? It seems when the power cable is pulled it transfers the strain to the jack insert causing it to stretch and loosing intermittent contact?

For the power connector, I would look into a port replicator. Hard wire the ac adapter to the port replicator.

Maybe in a office setting them cables are OK but at a construction site its a joke. One really good pull and that lock will rip right out of the Toughbook. Take a look and see how thin the wall is where the lock goes.

    Well in that case.
Make a bottom plate out of 3/16 steel and screw it right over the original base plate using new and longer Torx security screws. Make the new plate wide enough to cut several holes in the sides that stick out. Bolt or padlock the 3/16 plate to whatever you want using 5/16 chain.

Or use a lockable dock and attach the dock to whatever you want using 3/8 bolts.

If they want to steal it bad enough, they WILL steal it. Usually if they try to steal it and fail, they destroy it just to p*ss you off.

Use a shoulder strap and take it with you. I take mine into the men's room.

Also remember you have the option to lock the bios out and hard drive if you want too, making it unusable to anyone if they were to take it.

yep ... locks and cables only keep honest people honest .
a set of bolt cutters will defeat most physical security devices .

there are what amount to "lojack" devices for laptops but these are activated after the fact ...
placing a laptop in a metal briefcase or similar item (think faraday cage) easily defeats any rf device while allowing the sticky-fingered lowlife to walk away without raising so much as an eyebrow of anyone looking on .

a very loud siren would be a good deterrent ... and easy enough to implement .
arm the alarm and if the comp is so much as moved the siren starts wailing and will not stop until reset .

if there were a way to provide isolated sections (say handle halves and case sections) and charge them with about 10KV triggered by a motion detector (as above) it would not be hard to spot the thief ...
he will be the one rolling around on the ground about 6 feet from where the comp was sitting , cursing and p*ssing all over himself .
    :twitchy:
ya know ... seriously i would like to see that just once in my life .

That would be funny but illegal. OR just attached a small box on top with a explosive die pack to it and also synthetic skunk gel mixed in with it. Here about the bank robber putting the month bag in his crotch and know what happened to him? He was on the ground in pain and now wearing pink underwear.

How about a DIY lojack. For under 20 bucks on ebay you can get one of those usb gps tracker. You text to the number and it tell you where it's at. Some of the more expen All it would take is to mod in a internal USB port and run another antenna. This could be placed inside the toughbook and draw from it's own power and the laptop battery for longer life.
