Well I do not even have my CF-29 yet, but I know that 80GB will not do it for me. I need to take a lot more data with me.

As I expect to be in a harsh environment without ready access to replacement parts, my criteria for selection, in order of weighting for a new HDD are as follows:

    #1 Reliability

    #2 Size

    #3 Speed

#4 Price (and yes, money is an object...)

So I defer to the mass wisdom of the board! These are my choices, based on input from the FAQ.

    Samsung SpinPoint M5 160GB UDMA/100 5400RPM 8MB 2.5" IDE Hard Drive
    Part # HM160HC-NDW
    New $54.99

    Samsung SpinPoint M5 160GB UDMA/100 5400RPM 8MB 2.5" IDE Hard Drive
    Part # HM160HC-N
    New $56.99

    Western Digital Scorpio 250GB UDMA/100 5400RPM 8MB 2.5" Notebook HDD
    Part # WD2500BEVE-DT
    New (Almost Gone ) $96.97

    Western Digital Scorpio Blue 320GB UDMA/100 5400RPM 8MB 2.5" Hard Drive
    Part # WD3200BEVE-DT
    New $105.97

My gut reaction is to go with the bigboy, the WD Scorpio 320GB, I do not know the difference between the two Samsung SpinPoints outside of price.

    Help!

Well since all your choices run at 5400 rpm, and you said that 80GB is too little, you should just get the larget drive you can afford.

I have not found a faster spin large, 150GB+ HDD but I am open to suggestions.

 Yeah... 64GB is about as big as they come and I have not seen anyone here using one yet.

King spec makes PATA SSD Drives up to 256GB. Of course you will be paying big for these. I've used a 64GB Transend PATA SSD in my CF-29, and a X25-M SATA SSD in my CF-19.

I have one in my cf-27. If you get a SSD get a SLC drive rather than a MLC drive. If you do use a MLC make sure that you use a 128mb offset. There is an article about this, just google SSD offset.

Well we have a positive affirmation for the Samsung from a respected member! I was really hoping to go larger though. I have a lot of books, videos and Powerpoints to take with me! :D

An option to consider is an external harddrive.

One of the advantages of having data on that instead of the laptop, is that if something happens to your laptop, you won't lose your data.

Thanks, but I will have a lot more luck keeping up with one laptop then a ton of accessories. But I do plan to carry an outboard 5.25" USB Mega drive for file backup.

But I need a lot of data handy for my purposes.

A 5.25!!!! Why not just go ahead and carry the rest of the PC around with you and do away with the laptop? Come on....with the technology that is out there today there is NO reason you would want to lug around a tank like that!

I am currently running a WD Scorpio Black 320GB and so far it's been good too me. I was a little weary of WD products, but not now. These days, if you go with a major player you should be fine.

I am using a WD Blue 320GB in a CF-48 and a CF-28. I could not find a Black WD, not even on their own website!
