Since I got touched by the Toughbook virus, i bought several of them.

    I now have a CF-27, 3 CF-28s, 1 CF-29, 4 CF-M34s and a CF-71.

    I might buy a CF-29 mk4 or a CF-18/CF-19 soon.

One thing i was wondering: What toughbook is the toughest of them all ?

As this forum has many users, many of them who use their toughbooks for years, i hope to get the answer.

I read on another Toughbook forum, that the CF-27 is the toughest one...

What do you guys and girls think ?

    I have owned:
    CF T2 (1)
    CF 27 (3)
cf 28 (to many to count)
    CF 29 (3 and parts)
    CF 30 (1)
The toughest, I think was the CF 27

    CF-M34.
Equal to CF-27, but smaller, lighter, and more tough :)

    Lol.

but why not the CF-19 or CF-31?
oke, the 31 has a fan, but the 19 is as tough as it gets AFAIK? What makes them tougher/stronger/longer lasting?

    CF-19 up to mk4, I think the mk5 (2520m) does have a fan (35W CPU).

The toughest is a Dell XFR!!!!
    J/K.. I couldn't resist..

Side note, since I got the DELL XFR, I have beat the out of it everyday, no problems or warranty claims. Yet.... :)
Just a few scuffs on the lid and some wear on the rubber bumpers..

I thought that as the CF-31 with i5 has a fan, the CF-19mk5 would have one as well.
Let me get this right: they can passively cool a 2520m in a CF-19 but can't do it in a bigger CF-31 w/ same CPU (and intel graphics) ?

I'm wondering how hot a 19mk5 would get in 30-40-50 C environment, doing CPU intensive tasks.

anyways, i've come across this article:

The fan is set up still where no water can get in, the fan is on top of a sealed plate on a CF-31.

My vote goes to the CF-28. In some sways it feels stouter than my CF-29 and 30. I have changed out one CF-19 screen that broke on a hard floor drop, but have one CF-28 that has a hit on the top cover that cracked the screen from the back side. It has a bulls-eye on the screen now and you can still see everything on the screen.

    Personally have owned the following:

    CF-18 - Still have it
    CF-19
    CF-29 - Still have it
    CF-30
    CF-31
    CF-T5
    CF-C1 - Still have it
    CF-H1

You know which I personally think is the Toughest? My H1! And I'll tell you why: It's MUCH lighter and has WAY LESS parts to break. That old phrase: "The bigger it is, the harder it falls" is true here I think. It's been dunked and dropped many times and it just feels the most durable. The H2 is even TOUGHER!! I wanna buy an H2, but won't until the MK2 units are out which will drive the MK1 prices way down.

I got a-hold of a dandy the other day...actually two. :) CF-30MK1 non-touch. The used battery couldn't decide between 5.3 and 7.4 hours at 94% . It is not equal to the CF-30 1,000 nit screen but the polarized lens is a.o.k. in my book even at 500 nit. (battery fluctuated while on the net)
In the house I have it dialed down under half way.
For field work...like one of my fire trucks I think it will shine. :D (pun intentional).
    Definitely tough.

    Jeff...shiny...

My CF-17 is the toughest thing I have ever owned. It has rattled around in the back of a work van for the last 8 years or so. Still on the original OS build.

I vote for the CF-28. The damn thing just wont die.

I've had it since april 2010. Survived two years of use and abuse (mostly abuse) in the workshop.

I have a customer with a XFR and he needs to clean the fan at least once a month. I have another here in parts because sea water got sucked into it.

I have yet to get a Toughbook in for major repairs due to outside conditions.

    Unless I haven't found it yet, my CF-19A (mk5) hasn't got a fan. :D
It can do some aggressive throttling when needed, but it can also boost the processor. And with much, much care (very low lighting on my display, very sparse use of 3G, no Wifi, no music playing, just writing long long texts) I can also get over 9 hours on a battery charge.

As for out and out toughness with the fewest issues on any part used... Probably the CF-28 followed by the CF-29/30/31...

Mine have survived stuff I thought would have/should have killed it...

Definitely the CF-M34 because it can stop a bullet -- see below.

The Mk7 version has a 1GHz processor, 1280 MB memory, and fitted with a SSD and rebuilt battery it can run fast for more than 4 hours. Can even get it with a rubber keyboard, and our friend Teo can build in a nice GPS.

How can the M34 be the toughest? It got an IPX3 rating? Compare that to the IP65 of the current 31 and 19?!!

    Same IP54.
Panasonic just got a better certificate (IP65) against the old one (IP54), but there were no changes in fact :)
But I (105kgs) can jump on M34 without any damage. And CF-19 will at least loose it's good appearance after that :)
But CF-19 is enough, of course :)

Hahaha, nice way of saying it!

But I'm confused by Barr. The docs on the M34 state IPX3, which isn't much in terms of waterproofness while he says it is IP54 in real life?
The difference between IP54 and IP65 should be quite considerable btw.

But the consensus seems to be that the M34 is the thoughest of them all :D

I vote for CF-M34. Perfect machine. One problem is dim screen. Anybody there working on the mod for LED backlight? I had my CF-M34 on the sailboat, it was in the cockpit locker. Bilge pump hose brock an the locker filled with bilge water and nobody was aboard to save it from drowning.
CF-M34 was submerged for 2 days. After hosing it down and drying it worked.
The keyboard and the battery connection board needed replacement. I have to mention, that I had the docking connector silicone sealed. CF-M34 is one TOUGH MACHINE :)

Something to think about....how many of the Toughest of the Tough allow changing out cells in the battery like the CF-M34.
I have the case split and the new cells on hand waiting for me to get time to do the job.
The keyboard lay-out is better than the CF-18/19 IMHO.

That's just the plastic "badge" on the outside of the lid. Underneath is all metal. But it's a magnesium alloy so you REALLY don't want to get that too hot

I'm gonna add my growl to the CF-28 consensus; I still see them in everyday use all over the place. Not that the 34 isn't in some ways more rugged; it has the ruggedness of a rock, which, as a computing device, it is much more closely related to. ;)

In other words, yes the 34 is stouter, mostly because it's smaller; but it doesn't qualify as a laptop. It's a subnote, or perhaps a dinosaur's netbook. Yes, that's it. Big head, tiny little arms. Perfect match for a T-Rex.

Of my collection my 29 is the toughest. The 51 battery cover broke 1st time I opened it to see what battery was in it. My family killed my 72 in less than a month. It was survived by it's touchscreen.
