"Goofed up" is a very kind and generous way to put it Rob! I would call it a bald faced lie. One which, if relied on, would cost people time, money and energy.

But I see that the author is a journalism major, so I guess that he is just practicing his hyperbole, exaggeration and ability to make wild conjecture.

Sorry, this is one of the reasons most people can not stand the media.

Bonus points for anyone who can figure out what model he is actually talking about.

I was thinking a CF-51 since I happen to have one on my bench right now, building it as a replacement for my dad's aged Spotted Cow. (Thanks Driller) Those very vague directions could indeed apply to this model, and it is nearly as ubiquitous in its market as the CF-29 is in the fully-rugged market.

On a side note: Dumb@ss. Didn't even double-check the model # he was looking at. I wonder which of our teardowns he plagiarized for that waste of electrons.

    mnem
I know what you're thinking. You should be ashamed.

    Definitely not a CF-29 or a CF-51.

Why not a 51? the "Held on with just one screw" bit? To the average ID10T who's never changed a CPU in a laptop and just watched someone else do it or followed someone else's (who DID know what they were doing) pictorial guide, wouldn't the 1/4 turn lock look like "Just one screw"? Oh... wait I see... he describes taking the handle off, so NOT a 51.

    Mmmhmmm... CF-72?

Hey... tripped over this guy while looking for an exploded view of the 72. He's got cheap prices on some parts for the older ToughBooks; anybody done business with him?

I was going to put some pithy remark down here but I forgot.

"Repeat this procedure to remove the CD/DVD drive above the battery compartment"

DVD drive is not above the battery in a CF-51.

"Remove the two Phillips-head screws fastening the laptop's carrying handle to the front edge of the computer."

CF-51 does not have a carry handle.

"Remove the entire top cover assembly from the laptop to reveal the top side of the motherboard."

You only have to (basically) remove the speaker grille, KB and the plate under it to access the processor, not the "entire top cover assembly".

If you still have both of those 72's I sent you check it out. I never took them apart. If if did I am sure 1 to 12 Pentium 3 would work well in there. I think I got one to play with a while back less than 3 bucks to my door.

I see one cf-72 motherboard with removable and one that looks like it isn't.

EDIT: Looking through the old wiki links I see where they talk of upgrading the P4 cpu in the later models and one reference on a CF-72 Mk2 that is P3 that is is socketed and removable.

Yeah, that's what I was talking about; but the handle assembly isn't removable on the 72. Only the 27s and 34s remove that way, right?

The more I think about it, the more I think this guy is just a 'tard who made an amalgam of teardown guides from several different models; or not even a Toughbook at all - maybe a GoBook.

    Whaddaya say Ador? Gobook II?

Ok, lets look this over. "FACTS" he stated.

Battery pack in lower right hand corner
    DVD drive above the battery
hard drive on the opposite corner
    plastic hinge covers
    4 screws holding down keyboard
    metal plate for keyboard wiring
lcd cable upper right hand corner
laptop handle hooked to front of the laptop
He describes pulling the "top" cover to access the mother board and you have to pull cables to do it. He describes as seeing the top of the motherboard after pulling it out.
Then talks about removing the heat sink.

SO, I see a couple of things that could be right and ALOT that isn't. Even doesn't match up to a gobook unless it's some newer model I don't have.

Maybe it was an experiment... see how many views his blatantly BS HowTo got before some geek corrected him. I used to do that for fun with D&D geeks when I was younger...

I'm almost tempted to look at the link but that would compromise my vow to never click on a eHow link. The whole eHow model is to generate page views for revenue. They have absolutely no interest in accuracy, just scamming their Google rating to maximize revenue. I'm sure they don't care about my one man boycott but they are the worst of the internet and have probably caused real people real harm in addition to wasting a lot of people's time with their crap. Imagine the poor schmuck who rebuilds his brakes using eHow
