What are the wings/wide handles on the screens of some cf-18/19's? Do the serve a purpose other than maybe to have a better hand hold. One cf-18 unit I have purchased and is not at home is suppose to have this.

I think they are the GOBI antenna covers. My 19 had these "wings" too. :)

    I VOTE FOR
    1. SELF DEFENSE FEATURE.
    2. Keeps fingers off screen.

    Mk5 CF-18 has them.

Do you know the reason? Why do the WWAN-ready models not have them? Just curious.

do not know the reason, any 18/19 with a wireless modem in it is required to be in on there.

Maybe they protect some interference but I have never seen them do anything other than break

I am not too fond of the look either, that is why I was thinking of swapping them out if they unit shows up like that.

Everything prior to MK IV's had these big wings..... When I bought my GOBI 2000, they actually provide new panels that are less than 1/2 of the original stuff in the previous MK's. They also include a lot of other stuff that I have never figured out what it is used for. Bummer, I am sure it has purpose, but what, I don't know. Anyway, the smaller ones are actually pretty cool looking and I think they allow for more expansive reception/transmission of 800 mghz signal?

According to Panasonic's service center, the only, ONLY reason for these stupid waste of space wings is because of the FCC regulations! GAH!

I still have my old ones, can I put them back on and hope not to be caught by the FEDS? (LOL) Interesting they put these on for no reason? Thanks..... It does make pulling open the screen easy from different positions though!

I'm sure, as with the infamous mattress and pillow tags, the regs only apply to the manufacturer; not to the End-User.

Probably to prevent those "evil (radio) rays" from entering your body through your hands, then working their way to your brain and turning you into a Republican ! (or Democrat: pick your party ;)) <snicker> :swoon:

    Still ugly, though.

No doubt!!!!! :) Quite bizarre that they have this "dissipation" device attached to my TB CF 19 MK IV for no reason! It's all plastic, obtrusive, yet quite nice as I said to open the screen.... BTW, the antennae adapter supplied, do tilt them out a tad, would that be a problem going back to OEM, or are there "micro" reflectors built in to the "wings" and I should just leave what I installed alone? Man, GovReg sucks!!!!!

FCC versus Europa compliance...... How different is that! Are you growing things out of your head, fingers, toes, or elsewhere? LOL :)

That antena is an ergonomic designed to strengthen the signal.

That's not true. It's just to make sure you don't hold the aerials right against your body, which the FCC fear may irradiate people.

Obviously if I end up gaining superpowers and joining the X-Men then I'll be a happy guy :)

That makes sense. Lets hold a cell phone right next to your brain and the TB will be 3 feet from your body. Oh well, changed mine back, no signal loss at all.

Is there any difference between the non-wing antenna covers for a CF-18 and one for a Mk 1-2 Cf-19?

I have a CF-19 Mk4 and am thinking about getting rid of the wings. Seems like new flat covers for the Cf-18 genereally go for less on eBay that those for the Cf-19.

This is what one seller says

    or
If these are new then you will not get them any cheaper than that...even Heartlands will be double after shipping $29.99 and $39.99 free shipping (same seller)

The covers new from Heartlands are ($11.71) $23.42 for 2...not counting shipping ($25.00-$40.00)

I was noticing how the wide handles somewhat protected the GPS.
