All of this is preliminary and subject to change by Microsoft!!!!!!!

Hi all. Ok I have been researching this a lot. The official release is July 29, 2015. The bad news first, Vista wont work.

Now the good news most versions of Win 7 Sp1 and Win 8 will upgrade to Win 10 and be free for life!!! You will get KEY and ISO file, in case you need to do clean install. You cannot reuse Win 7/8 key, it will be tied to the Win 10 install. And free upgrade for one year after that date, till July 29.2016. Now the slightly bad news, If you decide not to do, or go past free date, purchase is at least Win 10 Pro will Be US$$ 199(subject to change). there will be other versions, but this is the one most will use and or get. Google wisely.

Good /bad news at the same time, most older laptops that run Win 7 barely, may not pass the PC check and be upgradeable.(more on this Soon)

Ok you will need several KBs including: Windows 10 patch KB 3055415, among others. MOST likely this will be done automatically by windows update and you will see a Win logo in task bar, click and follow instruction to reserve download. UNLESS the PC check has issues, check carefully to resolve, Good Luck!!!
Check C:\Windows\sysytem32\GWX, if you have this folder then you have the update needed.

If the logo does not appear or look like it is not working, Google win icon logo fix and try several of solutions offered by various windows forum, it is resolvable, but have to patient, Good Luck................. :)

    *********** :)**************

I am hoping to build a kind of database to help people, as Win 10 is it!? for the next 5-10 years as Microsoft is declaring, BTW Win 7 expires in 2020, and Win 8 2022? still will be able to get good life out of Toughbook if you cant upgrade, or go Linux :)

Ok now that that is out of the way, I would like to start a running thread as to how your activation of the update went and what model Toughbook...................this can help others.......................... :)

    Ok I will go first!

    Give model Number
    Give OS and if passed.
    Give if not passed why?

There are so many photos of CF-19's bottom covers on ebay :)))

My CF-19 MK4 passes Win10 (preinstallation) tests, but I've already tried Win10 on MK5, and there is at least one driver that doesn't want to install (exclamation mark). One of PCI controllers, maybe Intel thermal management. Will try again in August :)

    hi all just an update.......

the thing with the win 10 message on task bar is it checks the cpu, mem and graphics, mostly. Where the main ISSUE, is in the graphics card.

Anything lower then intel 945 graphics is and issue because it will not let you upgrade to win 10 and suggest new laptop.

basically if you can run win 7 on laptop and have at least intel 945 you should be fine for win 10. just wont get all features(like Aero Peek, glass)

but don't despair win 7 is good till 2020, in my case my CF 18s are good for me as I don't plan to get rid of them yet, still serviceable as I have them setup to what I like, and are low hours and excellent condition................................. :)

If the license key is not 100% legit, Win 10 will flag it.

Hi I have several of these installs to do, but haven't gone smoothly. I have decided to hold off for awhile. also none of mine where activated on first day?? Asking me to wait.

You only have 30 DAYS to ROLL BACK if you don't like it. Also must install and activate first time, then you can make recovery disk if you have future issues.

From what I have read it 50/50 on Win 10 installs, but well received.

Privacy will be big issue, for privacy not use express install, do local install, DONT use you email. Also go to privacy panel and opt out of everything.
DONT use WifiSense, will share password in Wi-Fi with social network friends aka Facebook etc. Cortana will collect voiceprint and searches.

Read the fine print. Microsoft has assumed Google LIKE powers, will collect all data , photos, searches location etc etc, you agree by clicking yes, like android phone!!!!!

Even has a UNIQUE ID number to let advertisers and internet track you, they will know who you are, no matter what device you use.

Win 10 is an improvement but sadly the above is now the norm.

Also use a Firewall, Antivirus, and malware of your choice, no OS is immune, no matter what they promise.

You can download Win 10 ISO directly, just get one equal to your version,ex: Pro to Pro.

Then use The Windows media creator X32 or X64 depending on your computer and download the version you have. You can make install DVD or USB your choice.

There is a ALL version ISO, but cant find link.

Turn off your PC, disconnect all cables, cut Wi-Fi radio signals, get rid of mobile phones (SIM cards separately) and slowly crawl to the nearest cemetery.

Well I just did my 53 again with W10 . It installed better this time around but I still don't like it. The time it will take for me to get it the way I like it is just not worth it when W7 works great. So tomorrow it's back to W7.

    Hi all

Just an update, took the plunge and did my two CF 30s from win 7 pro to Win 10.

It went a little slow, but mostly 85% error free. I did upgrade no clean install. It transferred and kept about 90% of my stuff.

The CF 30 C model went good at about 90% of stuff transferred, lost some programs but not my important ones, and about 95% of the drivers went over to the new OS.

The CF 30 F model was ok at about 98% of stuff transferred, lost some programs but not my important ones, the drivers here where bad at about 70% only made it. Had to reinstall about 6 drivers.

Had better luck using Win 7 drivers.

My CF 30 F model is a dual screen digitizer/touchscreen which I use. But even in bios Win 10 will only see it as tablet on auto setting, only one I could get to work.

Some small divers just wont work or show up(hidden??) but not enough to make difference. All hotkeys work just fine, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and gps too.
on the CF 30 C model , the sierra wireless card doesn't work.

Ok now the weird stuff, some icons on desktop wont work even in admin mode, but if you go thru start menu and run icon tile as admin will run fine???
    especially adobe reader 11X.

The start menu is ok but too many tile and everything is in weird places, you can pin to start menu. trying to find something is a pain. Just to awkward but its the future.

Overall seems faster and cleaner, just not as simple as Win 7. which is still good till 2020.

I made the HUGE mistake of cleaning the drive thru the app and didn't realize that it deleted old install!!!! :( Luckily it did activated overnight so it is good to go. I will have to source some more Win 7 OS and keep them as I might want to revert back, lets see what time shows.

Honestly its ok , I still think Win 7 is far better, but if you have Vista or Win 8 it is like night and day.

If you have Win 7 think about it, if you have Win 8 upgrade asap.

On desktop still have Win 7 Pro, might wait till next summer for upgrade while free.

On side note gaming is ok in Origin and Steam.

i might give it a try on my '30 if i can activate it with the coa/key on the bottom .
i just have too much good stuff on the present drive to risk it going *yee-haw !* .

    Hi all another update!!! :)

    ****** Vista upgrade typo.....................sorry***********

Well I tried last 2 days to get my CF 18 N models up with Win 10 , or I was going to sell them and get 2 CF 19s.

Helps if you have win 10 upgrade icon in taskbar.

I tried every registry hack I could find, and finally got a couple to work, so Win 10 on a CF 18 is possible!!! :)

Number one went thru with out a hitch after the seventh try, then it went flawlessly, but 2 hours plus.
Number one had every driver work and all functions touchscreen rotate, hotkeys all work

Number two went thru with out a hitch after the third try, then it went flawlessly, but 2 hours plus.
Number two had most drivers work and most functions touchscreen rotate, hotkeys work.
Had to reinstall common, misc. and new drivers.

Some of the programs had to be reinstalled most @ 80% worked.

One caveat, the display was set to 1200x900, when it is only 1200x798, in the setting it was at 125% and had to set to custom a 100% and restart to get screen right.

Now come testing and daily use, seems ok now except for privacy, plus you only have 30 from day of install to go back to prior OS.

    I will update later..............................thanks.

Ok, I'll add my 2 cents worth since I have had some experience with Win 10 and Toughbooks now...I built a Windows 7 Pro 32 bit image for a MK1 CF-19CHGAXBM...did the upgrade for Assistive Technologies then the anniversary update...(installed my own key) and EVERYTHING worked! Even the Tablet buttons, including the keyboard. I am running a Samsung 128GB SSD and so far it runs really good...More will be revealed...
