I have a CF-74 with a 2.0ghz and 4gigs of ram and have no troubles with Windoz 7 and the software I need to run. I am a GM Technician and use my Toughbook all the time, we have an interface module we connect to for diagnostics (wireless in shop, usb away from shop) and module programming, all through a web-based (and/or installedsoftware) browser.

My question is that I am thinking that the smaller CF-19 with the convertible LCD monitor to tablet orientation would make using the PC inside the vehicle for testing and also for reference to GM repair information easier, and when road testing it is used as a scan tool, making it easier to hang onto.

The role of the PC has become a very major tool for me to accomplish my job, and the smaller CF-19 is attractive, I don't have the budget at this time to buy a quad core or whatever the newest is, so as an entry device I was thinking about a good used one (CF-19) and I see that 1.06ghz seems to be very popular.

Any advice? If it runs Windoz 7 without bogging down, it should do what else I need.

Shawn, I don't have one picked out, looking for information to do that, Which is better, core duo, or core 2 duo? My 74 has the Core 2 Duo, 2.0ghz though.

Maybe a recommendation of MK2 or MK3 etc. I plan on just looking on Ebay at this early in the game. If I like its performance may plan to save up for a NEARLY new one! LOL

Thank you Ador, good info. What is the x25 with the SSHD mean? I have a hybrid 750 Seagate in my 74, supposedly the 8GB? solid state part is for faster access, stores frequently accessed data.

Although Panasonic does not advocate putting Windows 7 on a Mark 1 or Mark 2 CF-19, many have on this forum. I believe starting with the Mk3's 1.2 ghz, Windows 7 was an option.
Prices obviously jump up for MK4-6's. Scroll to the bottom of this link for an example of specifications as related to the MK's:
Buy Panasonic Toughbook CF-19 Custom or Preconfigured Models
Another great site is: ~Toughbook Talk~ Toughbook Discussion • Index page
Prices vary accordingly to specifications. Refurbished ones from reputable sellers are available. Windows 7 rocks with an SSD conversion! Best regards. Cleve

BTW, Ador referenced (above) this link for a value SSD:

    Take care

I have had/have so far the Mk1,2,3. I haven't put windows 7 on a Mk1 that I have kept yet but everyone has like it. I didn't have to do the bios update because it was a digitizer model. The Mk1 touch models can have touch screen problems, the Mk2 up don't seem to have any problems.

I would get a Mk2 or Mk3. The Mk2 is core 2 duo 1.06, 945 chipset/video, the Mk3 has a upgraded chassis, the front corners can't chip as easy, bottom of the screen where it hinges has a bulge to add strength, LED screen, Core 2 duo 1.2, 4500 chipset/video. I am typing this on my Mk3 right now. The LED screen makes a BIG day light readable screen difference compared to the Mk2. I watched a movie in the car on my 19 from the heliport in Saudi to Bahrain.

I don't have some of this added to the guide yet but I will be updating it soon with more info and hacks. Still got to add GPS to mine when I get a chance.

Just a fancy name to make it sound cool.. When buying one of these drives that ADOR pointed out... X25 (SSDSA2M160 G2GN) make sure it's a G2...this model supports Trim...G1 does not

Thank you all, valuable info. It seems that I may look for a "high miler" MK3 to start, and maybe keep. A real popular model it seems (the cf-19 that is)

I have a CF-19 Mk2 with Win 7, 4gb ram, and a 128gb SSD. Really nice computer, especially after I finally got the WLAN card upgraded to wireless N. These things are built like tanks, and are great machines.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/panasonic/725310-toughbook-ssd-thread.html

There is the bench marking thread we have. I know my Mk3 is on there, the girlfriends Mk2(I think) and her Mk1. Their is also a Mk4/5 19 to look at. If you have thought about a SSD for your 74 model their is a Mk3/4 results to look at.

I have slowly been squeezing more out of mine, mainly modded video drivers. Still compiling results. I got portal and few other games to work fine on the Mk2 and Mk3. Didn't try the Mk1 but it should still work. I have seen videos where modded 4500 drivers can allow even games like skyrim to be played. I just haven't pushed the Mk3 I have that far yet. Being fanless I have been taking it in steps.
