For the Toughbook Techs.. SPECS BELOW

While I know this isnt the recomended or ideal hard drives for the toughbooks, and most here recomend the 7200 IDE/PATA drives, they are getting more expensive and harder to find.

I'm looking for drives to put in older cf-28, cf-29, and was wondering if these would fit the bill.

I'm interested mainly because if bought in bulk, a lot of 50, I get can get them for $7.00 each, a huge savings.

    WILL THEY WORK?

    Thanks. :D

The Seagate Lyrion 30-GB hard drive (part number ST730212DE) is an internal, 1.8-inch hard drive that connects to a computer through an IDE/PATA interface. The drive's small 1.8-inch form factor makes it appropriate for data storage when used with mobile computers, personal media players, digital video cameras, or other portable storage devices.

Each hard drive meets the following specifications.

    Capacity: 30 GB Speed:
    3,600 rpm Cache buffer:
    2 MB Interface:
    IDE/PATA (40-way ZIF) Average latency:
    8.3 ms Internal data transfer rate: 350 Mb/s Sustained data transfer rate: 24.5 MB/s Dimensions (H x W x L): 0.1974 x 2.1378 x 2.8071 inches (5.15 x 54.3 x 71.3 mm) Weight: 0.1058 lb (48 g)

40-way ZIF connector will not work without some kind of adapter, adding cost and complication. You need ATA-5 or similar interface.

You will not only need the adapter for the connection, you will have to adapt the drives to the caddies as they are much smaller than 2.5" drives. Those drives are for iPods and the like. I'll look in the shop, I'm sure I can find you a few drives in the 30-40GB range you can have for free. Now, all you "Refurbishers" out there, lets clean out our shops and do a little something for the kids.

Pass on those, they will be too slow

The average price I pay these days is $50 to $70 for brand new 2.5" ide hard drives
These are examples of my recent hard drive replacements

    WD Scorpio Blue 80GB
    Samsung HM160HC 160GB
    Hitachi 60GB 7200RPM

TC1988, I think you miss the point. He is running a charity and is looking for CHEAP hard drives for kids in the third world. As for the 100GB Hitachi, not worth the money, the 160GB Samsung is half the price and just as fast.

    Gotcha,

Thank you one and all, I will not walk, but run, from the aformentioned drives.

Capt. We'd love any you have, and with our caddies selling, be it ever so slowly, we even have a little money if needed.

Funny, I've been all over newegg, as they had some nice deals on RAM for around 16/18 dollars, and should have been chasing the drives.

Localy, I had some 80gig drives that were costing me $75, and then found a bunch of 10gig IDE 2.5 at the local goodwill computer store for $5 a peice. The 10gig will work for some projects, but not my latest undertaking. The larger ones I bought are for the last of our CF-29 that are going to three sites in the Dominican Republic next month.

I'm currently working on a mockup of an octagonal (8 sided for us southern boys) kiosks, using a tubular steel substructure, frosted lexan skin, mounting four broken monitor cf-28s internaly, with four PDRC monitors and keyboards on the outside. That way when placed in the orphanage common areas, four kids can play and learn at once, the computers stay safe, with posters of operating instructions on the other sides.

Ive got all the toughbooks, the PDRC stuff, the cables, enough to build two full kiosks, I just need to pick up some more drives and RAM. I need these drives to be bigger than standard, as they will have games, some short videos, and educational programs. If these work well, we'll think about building more.

Bought a chop saw to cut the peices and next will try my hand at welding, figure TIG or MIG, as it looks like one can buy a machine for around 4 to 5 hundred and then I'll just have to learn how to weld. :D Gotta be a book or DVD on welding at Barnes and Noble or Borders.

Going to build one here for practice, make some detailed plans, and them builld them on site.

Again, thanks for the hard drive advice, will wait on Newegg.

    Sam

I've got 4 30GB Toshiba drives that were stock in CF-28s. All are freshly formatted and seem to work fine. Let me know where you want them shipped.

    Orphanir:

You might also look at something like this if you can find or have 3.5" drives lying around (for the kiosks, I mean)
