Finally took the plunge, thought nothing to loose, Win 10 on a Cf 18 N, that the update icon said can not update to Win 10????
Kept saying that Intel Mobile Graphics card 910 GSM and 915 GSM where not compatible.
Well I tried last 2 days to get my TWO (2) CF 18 N models up with Win 10 , or I was going to sell them and get 2 CF 19s.
Helps if you have win 10 upgrade icon in taskbar.
I had originally installed Win 7 Pro N,........ European version without media player programs.
I tried every registry hack I could find, and finally got a couple to work, so Win 10 on a CF 18 is POSSIBLE!!!![]()
There are only really TWO ways to install Win 10 ISO , thru windows update (which I did) or with USB stick.
Just keep trying till it works, Google every code or popup error window message , there are plenty sites with solutions, just be persistent.
Number one went thru with out a hitch AFTER the seventh try, then it went flawlessly, but 2 hours plus.
Number one had every driver work and all functions touchscreen rotate, hotkeys all work
Number two went thru with out a hitch AFTER the third try, then it went flawlessly, but 2 hours plus.
Number two had most drivers work and most functions touchscreen rotate, hotkeys work.
Had to reinstall common, misc. and new drivers.
SD Card worked right away in Win 10, didn't in Win 7,....... had to do some creative drivers/registry hack back in the day.
Some of the programs had to be reinstalled, most @ 80% worked.
One caveat, the display was set to 1200x900 for tablet mode, when it is only 1200x798, in the settings it was at 125% and had to set to custom a 100% and restart to get screen right.
Now comes testing and daily use, seems ok now except for privacy, plus you only have 30 from day of install to go back to prior OS.
I will update later with registry hacks that seemed to work..............................thanks.
One MAJOR caveat with this new OS, Microsoft has assumed Google like powers, PLEASE for the sake of...... take the privacy issue seriously, read as best you can and KNOW what you are agreeing to.
I will post as I continue testing and upgrading....................![]()

I start to think you are installing Windows 10 everywhere only to shout about privacy issues

Hi it is not a question about shouting, it is the fact that Windows IS IT........, 98 % plus of the market. Most companies use Apache (Linux) for servers etc. But the bulk of software is Microsoft, so you have to live with the TIGER, just don't make him mad. I work in this field rarely see Apple or Linux in offices or factories.
Win 10 is the defacto for next 10 years, Win 7 wont be here that long. trying to get the longest life out of laptops, where I can CONTROL, hence advise how to protect oneself. Think Facebook or any of them are secure or have your best interest at heart, not a chance!!!!!
Same is true for Android or Apple cell phone, they are not secure and suck every piece of data you use into a netherworld that you do not know who or what they do with that info, just stated current fact. Look at all the major retailers that were hacked, goodness the very US government was hacked, 14 million records plus, who need s that kind info. Be an informed consumer.
Hence I like to be informed, and help others make wise choices. -
Back to the show....................
Ok checking the CF 18 this morning in device manger, I saw that video card had yellow exclamation mark, so I decided to install the proper Intel 915GSM/910GSM driver. it seemed to work fine. as always I restarted to check and laptop lost display. Went into safe mode and uninstalled driver, Microsoft installed Microsoft Basic display Driver and everything works again.
I think that is why using that driver it let me install despite upgrade saying I couldn't upgrade. -
See article today in CNN about fridge hacking, not a joke..........................

Hi all another update.
*****Caveat, do IN PLACE upgrade, NOT clean install wont work too good the first time. Plus you can revert back to Win 7 if you like. You cannot do clean install because Win 10 will ask for Key . Once you do a upgrade and sign into your MSN account it will be registered ( It will register you thru internet on local account, just wont identify owner in MS database, more anonymous), then you can delete OS and use a ISO to do clean install*****
After several days of use it seems to be running about 90% right, which is good others are having major issues, see the internet.
Most programs seem to run right, the only major one I need that doesn't run is Adobe reader, it starts and just disappears??? Adobe should provide a patch soon, seems to be issue.
Believe it or not one of my CF 18 N is running Word 2000, even though they said it would not!!, heck it was free for me!!!
The major issue I am having is the display rotation tool, works about 50% of the time, seems since windows wont install the Intel GSM 910/915 driver along with the newmisc.inf necessary for Pen and tablet to work?? without that driver , device manager looses the cpls of Pen and Touch, but the tablet and digitizer pen work any way. Also it has installed a Wacom Tablet driver????
It would seem that when Microsoft installs updates, it will install hardware drivers also ................. so you have to disable the feature, see below.
Try this: Control Panel > System > Advanced system settings Hardware tab > Device Installation Settings and click on Device Installation Settings button > Change options as you desire.
Changes option to tell windows never update drivers
Go to device manager and install touch screen under hid compliant digitizer. normally Fujitsu tablet driver.
for tablet buttons I also used the Tablet Button registry hack found in the Install Win 7 on CF 18 thread.
to install Windows 10 as long as you have the icon on your taskbar, use this hack:
Warning: Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Before you modify it, back up the registry for restoration in case problems occur.
Locate the registry key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\OSUpgrade]
It should exist, but if not, create it.
Create a new DWORD (32-bit) Value with Name = "AllowOSUpgrade” (without the quotes), and set the Value = 0x00000001.
Once the registry key is modified, close and reopen the desktop Control Panel, go to Windows Update and check for updates. You should now be able to click the Get Started button to upgrade to Windows 10. Note: Windows 8.1 users must go to the desktop Control Panel, and not the modern Windows Update UI.”
another one is:
Open up the command prompt by hitting the Windows key and typing in cmd. Don’t hit enter. Right click and choose “Run as administrator.”
Type (but do not enter yet) “wuauclt.exe /updatenow” — this is the command to force Windows Update to check for updates.
Back in the Windows Update window, click “Check for updates” on the left hand side. It should say “Checking for updates…”
While this is happening, switch back to the command prompt and enter the command you already typed in.
You should now see Windows Update say that it is downloading Windows 10. Before you actually install it though, back everything up and make sure you’re ready.
On use after several days, Win 10 is ok, lots of hidden menus, learning curve here. Also if you run into issues, really need to be techy and lots of Google to solve issues. Long-term its worth the investment, but also you can keep Win 7 awhile longer. On my desktop I am going to wait awhile and there is a "SP1" coming later this year. should fix lots of issues.
Hey almost 10 year old laptop running latest OS, not bad!!!................................ -
Does the CF18 have an intel 915 intregrated graphics? I cant get past this on 2 toshiba Satellite laptops. and no one seems to think it can be done. I have tried ISO and upgrade methods, downloads and installs with no errors, gets stuck on first auto reboot into Win10, that black screen with a window. It should show a status swirly under it but it never does (12 hours) . Rebooting reverts back to win7 and gives me an error on safe_boot, fail.

run this. It will tell you if you can run Win8.1. If it says yes then Win10 will run.

Hi late late update.
Win 10 is working good. All buttons on front work after some loooong trials. Cant really say what I did, just a lot of installing reinstalling and restarts. But stable now.
The only MAJOR issue is the every time windows does a cumulative update after restart, it seems to loose some drivers!!!
I will usually have to reinstall or do a full power down and restart several times. Updates wont let me turn them off.
The other issue is when like I installed the GPS module, the driver like always took several restarts to work good. Annoying but doable. The issue s Win10 wont let me merge registry fix even under admin account. Had to manually type into registry with regedit( a major no no, you could fry registry/not start). Not sure if it really work just know it works. Any ideas on this would like to hear.
Not bad considering I got OS free and now my little CF 18 has another 10 years left in it with MS lifecyle................ -
Hi my CF 18 MK5 has 915GSM but Win 10 wont see no matter what I did. So I left it at basic display driver. Tablet works just fine.
I have done several CF 18s this way and seem to work fine and most people don't ask or care what in there, as long as it works.... -
Hi when I install WIn 10 I just let it install itself, it will do minimal workable install, reboot/restart then later try drivers. Do create system restore first, in case you need it later.
I have seen Pentium 750 MHz, 1 gig memory runs just fine slow but doable even if MS says no..... -
Hi just happens today is download Tuesday from MS, seems my CF 18s will update, but I have to restart several times to get it to "set" itself and everything even buttons works. Almost like MS update messes with registry then it realizes the drivers and they just start working after several restarts.
My CF 30 C and CF 30 F do not do this. I have two CF 18 Ns one has Win 10 Pro and other has Win 10 Pro N (Europe version, hey it was free!!)
and they both do the same. Rest of month work flawlessly, only on update days is it a pain.
does any one have solution/answer??? Thanks............................ -
Not any real help, but I disabled win updates completely. No more problems.
