OK guys, I searched and did not find a thread on this, so if it has been done, well light up the flame throwers and lets BBQ a pig!
Otherwise, I have just finished installing Windows 7 Pro on the newly installed WD Scorpio 320GB HDD. I had been shy of it. But then again, I stayed with DOS until Win98SE2 came out...
Win7 did not find my OEM Intel Wi-Fi card on its initial install. So I plugged in an Ethernet cable and ran Win-Update that way. It found everything except and UNKNOWN device and the sound card. I did some reading here and found where Mnementh divulged the secret identity of that device as Hotkeys. Thanks Dwagon!
So I got busy and stated looking for Vista or Win7 drivers, and then it hit me that I was suffering the effects of Sleep Deprivation, or I am just dumb. I had not even tried the OEM XP drivers for my CF-29L!
So I found my cache of those and it now runs fine.
Having never used Vista and I pretty lost! I am used to knowing where everything is and all the shortcuts! I am going to set it up to dual-boot XP as well. I was intent on having Umbuto on there, but Maybe after I catch on to Win7! I am just waiting on some setup disks.
Oh, my computer is a CF-29N.

The way I see it.... It definitely has it's advantages over XP... But it is pretty much XP-Like under the skin... Once you poke... It will all be familiar. When in doubt... Ask it a question... Or then there is Google.... Or the fire bweathing Dwagon....

I have Win7 on mine too, CF29-H but im having issues with the touch screen calibration... its fine in the middle, but gets more and more vauge as you reach the edges (Using the XP drivers)
The video driver also reports an issue, but it was a million oclock when i did it so havent investigated much!
Ive used the offical pana win7 hotkey drivers from the CF30 and the brightness works, but without the little icon...
Ive skimmed the above thread, and will have a better look laterthe XP drive is back in my machine for the time being!
yours is the newer chipset, so your a bugger!! -
I can not get my function key to work after putting win7 on my cf-29 mk5, is the trick to run the cf30 hotkey driver?
-
-
Guys the cf-29 MK5 xp drivers works for the Hotkeys.
Just unzip them, then install. -
For those of you running Win7, "God"mode.
To enter "GodMode," one need only create a new folder and then rename the folder to the following:
GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}
Once that is done, the folder's icon will change to resemble a control panel and will contain dozens of controls and settings.
While I really don't care much for the name, thinking it disrespectful, in reality you can name it anything that you like by replacing GodMode in front of the period.
It is pretty handy to have all setting in one folder, plus a few hidden ones.
I really did not want to do a separate thread on this, as it was not Toughbook specific. -
yes, I have been to every link in the world trying to get these drivers on this computer! very frustrated with my self for not knowing how to make this happen. I need to tell you guys that although I spend all day on a computer I know very little about downloading files and unzipping things. I did not know what a hotkey was till last week. even now so far as I know it's the function key? my girl says you can hit the function key and then another key several times and make magic things occur.
right now when I download the files I get this big gray box with what looks like the file name blinking in dark blue. the box has the text at the top asking me to "PLEASE INPUT THE FILE DESTINATION" I have no clue what that is or how to type a file destination. you guys have great info and everyday I wish I knew as much as you guys. I think when you give direction you assume I know all the basics. I think I am missing a really simple command to make all this happen? right now I have no audio and no function key. I put win7 ultimate on here so all the winXP stuff should work perfect like you guys said. HELP I really need to dim this bright screen! -
AHA! I got it!. I guess I turned this thing off and back one enough times. I was nosing around in some windows self help program and saw the files I had been downloading from the panasonic site, the windows XP drivers. I clicked on the sound driver and it started to download! next thing I know I here a few beeps, thats new! then I found the unknown device driver and loaded it, VIOLA the function key works. I think everything is working now. I am off to try and find the windows self diagnosis icon now.
-
Congrats! Let us know if you need anything else. The Panny drivers are kinda in a world of there own. Once you get the hang of the 3 basic ways they have to be installed, your ok.
-
On a side: don't feel weird about the title, God is HIS title, not his NAME so its perfectly ok to use and say in this respect. Just my 2cents... -
-
Truthfully, I've been following the threads but have neither the W7 install discs, the time nor the guts to try it yet, so kudos to those who dare ventured and clear the bush for the rest to follow. -
I have an issue with the graphic driver and windows 7 on a CF-29 Mark III
All the rest is working perfect.
Intel has no drivers for win 7 for this old graphic driver.
The screen works good in the standard VGA mode, but i keep getting a notification on startup.
Any suggestions? -
-
that godmode thing is pretty cool. not sure how to use all that but now it is in one place so I can go through the options faster, thanks azrial

Sounds like perfect French to me?~~
-
Azrial am I right in assuming that the Mk5 has the 915 chipset and only supports Win7 basic so no pretty transparency??
-
Maybe this will help:
Official windows 7 driver for 915 chipset is at Windows Update Catalog.
Use this one, forget tricks and unofficial things.
Navigate with IE8 to here
http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Home.aspx
and install plugin. Then type Intel Intel 915GM
Then go to device manager, update driver, Select the option to "Search for Drivers on my Computer" and point it to where you downloaded the file. Then "Manually Select a Driver" Finally Select Display Adapters and the 915 Driver is there

or:
you could disable driver signing permanently by typing this in an elevated command prompt;
bcdedit /set loadoptions DDISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS
restart then update the driver manually.
That should let you keep your old driver on your pc. -
I guess that it is possible, as I have seen where supposedly Intel wrote beta drivers for the earlier 855 chipset (Mks1-3) that supported Aero under Vista, and then scrapped the whole plan.
WHAT! You mean no aftermarket GPS. Bluetooth, no DVD-RAM, No Win7, no 2.25GB!
Nah. -
lol, no, it´s ok. this information comes from the sevenforums database not from me. i like unofficial things, really. *g*

I tend to be leery of ANY instruction that begins with "Navigate with IE8" ...
Any driver you can get via M$ Update you can get directly, and you don't need to infect your PC with IE8 or Automatic Mistakes Plugin to do it. Just do a little research, spend a little time on TechRepublic... you'll find whatever you need.

Ummm... yeah.
This is another one of those things like MSconfig and Windows Accessibility Options.
The MMC or Microsoft Management Console Snapin (which is what this is) has been around since Windows 2000; this particular variant isn't even NEW, as the exact GUID is a carryover from Windows Vista.
It's hardly a secret; it's common knowledge amongst SysAdmins and pretty much anyone who pays attention on TechRepublic. Do yourself a favor - go there, sign up, and review EVERYTHING from the Tip of the Day and IT Dojo. That Detweiler guy may LOOK like a nebbish, but he knows what he's talking about.
Oh, and join slashdot too... it's good for your mind.
And Azrial is right; the guy who named it GodMode is a putz.

Geek UP, people! -
As an update to my last post it was the 845 GMS that Intel was going to write to support Aero, not the 855.
Not that I care much for this kind of eye candy, but for those that do...
I am using the latest driver for the Intel Intel 915GM, the one CelticFrog has refereed us to, it does not provide Aero and my research seems to indicate that this is beyond the capabilities of the this video chipset. -

Well its been a week now since I put Win 7 on the below Toughbook. Never had a problem with any drivers but I find it runs slower.I like to take my 29 to the cottage and some nights I like to watch a movie but I find the movies freezes or slows down......never had this problem with XP. I run VLC and Media player but both the same. Also the bluetooth works sometimes and sometimes it don't . I have only had this CF-29 MK5 for 2 weeks and was running a 1.4 MK3 before but I could watch a movie no problem at all and the bluetooth worked great. Do you think I should look into a 4GB Readyboost ? or would that help.
CF-29N Mk5, 1.6GHz Centrino, Win 7 Enterprise (Pro) , 1.5 GB RAM ,SATA Mod 120GB 7200RPM HDD, DVD-RAM R/W, Emissive Keyboard, EnGenus 8602+S Wi-Fi, Factory Bluetooth -
Well Blair, your experience is different then mine, but computers are not simple machines. Will the 4GB Readyboost help, to be sure. Will it solve all your problems, doubtful. For an on-sale price of around $20, it is worth a try! Just make sure that you use Class 6 or faster SDHC. It will likely help yours more then mine due to the difference in RAM.
Let us know how it goes! -

I just did this.... Azrial... THANK YOU for posting this! It sure beats going around to the various places to do stuff. There is a TON of cool info in here as well as settings that I have been wanting to change.
THANK YOU! WAY COOL! -

One thing though... It is God Mode after all.... I was really trying to find the SMITE button.... There are a few people I know... and... well... You know.... I want to find the SMITE button...

I still remember how disappointing the KILL Command turned out to be in Unix! :confused2: -
NOT recommended on x64 Vista. I read mixed reviews so decide try it myself on desktop running Vista Ultimate x64. The second I saved the file name explorer got stuck in a crash/restart loop. Had to force shut down the machine. The issue continued in safe mode as well!
To fix it I had to enter safe mode w/ comand prompt and manually delete the folder. -

Server 2003 is based on Server 2000; it is natively 32-bit architecture with 64-bit extensions. XP 64-bit is the first release of Longhorn (which MS cripples to make the 32-bit version of Vista & Win7); it is natively 64-bit. Actually, the only thing they have in common is the name...

Any Masochists still trying to run XP x64 out there?
-
Been using it every day on my work PC for over 2 years; wicked fast & stable on a RAID 0 w/2 DeskStar 80GB 7200rpm drives, even though they are IDE. Got Win7 Ultimate BETA on a 250GB Raptor SATA drive almost as long; having used both side x side for so long, I'll tell you there is a lot more in common than different.
Aside from the Aero interface (which never really excited me, even when Apple was the only one who had is), I don't really see the difference except that I occasionally have to find a special driver, and of course no iTunes on my work PC cuz it depends on Quicktime, and Apple stubbornly refuses to validate XP64 for it.

Yes, on both XP64 & Win7 U-BETA. Don't know on Server 2003... haven't had to touch one of those relics since I went Form-1099, thank Ifni.

Having an issue with the SD reader in Win 7 on my MK4. Most everything else installed fine with the Vista drivers. The SD reader is showing in Device manager with an error message "This device cannot start. (Code 10)". I have tired pointing it to the Panny driver in the VistaUp folder with no luck. Also uninstalling the device and restarting is no help either.
The reader worked fine in XP incidentally.
Hopefully someone has solved this on their 29. I know I must be missing something simple. -

Seeing how it went down on the 29 I don't think I have the mental strenght to deal with it on 72. Someone should have warned me about the eternal Blue Screen of Life that takes like 20 mins between windows startup screen and select language.
"God Mode" worked on W7 x86 and x64 and that whole windows(super) key and arows trick worked nice for side by side windows.
