I'm sure it has been ask already, but I don't have time to search.

CF30. but it doesn't really matter..

    Configurator says ....WinXP (Vista COA),

I know that means it came with XP installed and a Vista COA on the bottom...
    Which recovery disks work?
Which needs activation via phone and which doesn't?

Well I had one CF-30 like that and I used the Vista restore disk with no activation problems.

in general , i have found that the *correct* OS follows the COA/key .
there were some "downgrade" installations (vista -> XP) that did use/accept the vista key .
however , if i recall correctly , there was a "special edition" (looked the same on the surface) of XP that (basically) green-lighted the use of the vista key to activate the freshly installed downgrade copy of XP .

as TB said ... " ... install W7" or go with vista ... XP is a dead horse .
my personal opinion is that loading a 'nix flavor OS is preferable to loading XP if you do not need to run any "windows only/specific" programs .

Install W7 or Vista...yes . But XP is a dead horse...that I disagree with you. Just because MS does not update it any more does not mean it's dead. What it means is they want you to spend $100.00 + on something they update BUT you don't want like W8.1  ...now we are talking about a dead horse

Yes I know many will disagree with me on this but XP has never let me down and I never installed all the updates anyways...did you ??

It's all about will the OS support the software program that you NEED to run..

Same as 32bit vs 64bit.......Everyone drinks the 64bit Kool-Aid cause that's what MS pushes on the consumer.

And security issues...in which case, the third party software is usually better than MS solutions anyway...

by dead horse i mean that M$ is not writing patches and correcting code ... unless you have a biiiiig (as in $$$$$) "service contract" that provides patches and whatnot .
to suggest that joe consumer or a business entity not install all the patches (etc) would be an irresponsible act on my part ... akin to saying "ehhh , you really don't need to change oil in your car or those filters for that matter ..." .
for my own personal use , that is an entirely different matter .
the bottom line is that i do not have the right to suggest that someone circumvent or ignore issues involving "safe hex" .

    the 64 versus 32 bit issue ...
i consider this to be more of a "run what you brung" point .
if you have a 32 bit processor then it is a moot point .
if you have a 64 bit processor then making the choice based on need (how much ram and memory do you need to address , etc) is a consideration .

one issue i personally am resolute about is 32 vs 64 when installing "microsoft office" .
all it took was one installation in a business environment and what it took to straighten it out has made me head-shy about installing anything but the 32 bit flavor .
there are some *compatibility issues* that M$ alludes to/gives warning about .

IIRC Microsoft specifically recommended that I install 32 bit Office on my 64 bit CF-53 'unless I had a compelling reason to do otherwise'. Sounds like 64 bit Office isn't ready for prime time.

I guess I started the ball rolling in the wrong direction... The question was "Will the Recovery Disks work?"

I *think* I recall going through this with a CF-29... If it is downgraded... Then that is what the Recovery Disks will load. But you can manually load the OS with the upgraded COA.... If that makes sense.

So to your original question... XP Recovery Disks would work and if you wanted Vista... You would have to load it manually but t least you would have the COA key to do so.

Can anyone confirm this? Truth be told... It's been a long time since I have used a recovery disk....
