    I am using a Panasonic Toughbook CY-F4 Mk2 (c. 2006) running MS Windows XP Pro (SP3).

    (1) Can Windows unzip "zipped files"? How do I do it?

    (2) For attaching large files to emails, can Windows create zip files? How do I do it?

    (3) If so, why would I need to buy a software package like WinZip?

    Thank you.

    Dr. T.

    Question 1 ,yes
    To extract
Right click on the file and you will see the Extract All option down the list and just follow the wizzard
    and 2 yes
To compress a file or folder:
    Right–click the file or folder.
    Point to Send To.
    Click Compressed (zipped) Folder

    WinRAR is the most versatile

Well one reason to get a compression program is to open archives other than Zip. There are a hell of a lot of them in circulation, including ones originating on Mac or Linux.

However, 7-Zip (as mentioned above) can decompress just about all of them for free, so there really is no need to pay.

winrar *technically* wants you to pay after 40days... but it doesn't mandate it.

I quit using WinRAR the day I discovered 7zip! They both work well, but has been said, 7zip is free!

The issue I had with 7zip. If a series of 500mb archives was utilized, and one was corrupt...

you wouldn't find out until after the unzipping process was nearly finished.

Winrar would *normally* tell you before the whole unzipping starts, or when it hits a dirty archive.

For anything else, I loved 7zip, but this was the one thing that killed it, for me.

WinRAR doesn't nag from the context menu :D (all I use, at any rate).
