I have already began on the adventure of Installing Windows 7 on my Toughbook. I am going to cremate Windows Vista Business and install Windows 7 where Vista was.
I'm almost done downloading the 2.44GB installation ISO and will burn it onto a DVD soon.
Stay tuned for updates and screen shots![]()

Popcorn is ready, just awaiting the show.
Good luck. -
Okay so I shut down the Toughbook (first time I think I’ve EVER shut it down lol), anyways it had 97% battery life remaining. Being that it is currently -13 in Chicago right now I don’t want to go to my car to get the plug, so I’m just gonna install this on battery
I’m putting everything on my web server as well for archive purposes here: http://www.robsnetworks.com/toughbook/CF-30 Windows 7 Install/ -
Ehhhhhhhh, I was downloading the entire time at around 750 – 950KB/second (we have 150MB short wave fiber here because I’m at work (which is a web hosting datacenter)) and now there is only 100MB left and the download is going at 63KB/second and is going to take another 25 minutes.
-
let us know how it goes i will be downloading windows 7 to play with as well just not for my TB
-
I think I will post the ISO on my website so people can download it from my sever if the Micro$oft server's are slow (like it is right now).
-
It was a fast download a few days ago!
The word must be out
Alex -
Finally got done downloading... its faster to just upload the ISO (~500KB/s) from my work computer over the VPN to my server than to just download it on my desktop at home lol... stupid Microsoft...
-
Soooooooo the touch screen portion works right in the Windows setup… that looks promising
I formatted the F: drive (Windows Vista drive) and am installing it on their. -
Some pictures:
-
Can you time the boot times and the shut down times. I heard they are super fast.
-
... it automatically updated my boot.ini file too
Some more pictures:
-
Rob,
You need to wash some of the fingerprints off your touchscreen before you take your friend out in public
CAP -
HAHA, yea i know its dirty
... anyways... some more information:
It found EVERY DRIVER except my Sprint card and my mogo mouse (which this ISN'T a driver for anyways, and some other unknown device...

So far I can say that the battery life is AWESOME (VISTA SUCKED) and that it's very very very fast.
Boot time from COLD boot to desktop was 1 minute and 15 seconds, of which Windows took 46 seconds to boot… FE NOMINAL!!!
I’m going to try and get drivers now -
Well their is a section for Biometric Devices under the control panal.
It also doesn't pop up an "are you sure you wanna do this, this is a system setting and you could blow up your computer if you are stupid" for every freakin thing (device manager for example).
I'm working on getting the sprint software installed and to get the touchscreen drivers to calibrate the screen. (Vista was never able to calibrate the screen)
There is also NO gadgets enabled by default (THANK GOD)
The transitions between pages and open windows (and the mini previews) are EXTREMELY SMOOTH.
It takes up 8.58GB of space on the fresh install... -
So the stupid thing just turned off on my when I went to launch Windows Media Center
...
Crash #1 FTW!
EDIT: so maybe it didn't crash... I think it hibernated... It thought the battery was dead for some reason... I donno -
It also comes with Internet Explorer 8 Beta…
-
So even though the bluetooth driver is installed and it see's my PCMCIA mobile mogo mouse, it connects and installs the drivers but then never actually works
The SD reader is also working fine.
Putting the computer into standby is quick and coming out of standby is also quick -
Okay, last update for now…
I installed the Vista driver for the Sprint card (I have an MC5725) and it isn’t working… I also can’t get the touchscreen drivers (or the calibration utility for that matter) to install/work -
I have seen videos where it booted up in 22 seconds and shut down in 8 seconds. That was on a desktop. On my X61 thinkpad I had better battery life with Vista then with openSuse 11 or XP. Go figure. I hope they only have two different versions instead of twelve with Vista.

http://www.robsnetworks.com/toughbo...00_client_en-us_Ultimate-GB1CULFRE_EN_DVD.iso = download from my server if you need it.
I'm done for tonight -
Rob
Your task manager looks about the same as mine, less overhead , compared to vista
Do the hotkeys work?
I have not got them to work on my cf-74 yet, so Im not able to control the screen brightness
That reminds me, if your hot keys work dim the screen so the dirt is not as noticeable
Or at least put Toyos Black avatar on as your wallpaper:wink:
Alex -
Windows 7?
have I missed something??

. I couldn't get the hot keys working. As a matter of fact a lot of things aren't working
:
1) Hotkey
2) Bluetooth (driver installed, but won't connect my mogo mouse)
3) Touchscreen (works but isn't calibrated, and can't seem to calibrate)
4) Sprint internal revA (Sprint utility installed but drivers for modem aren't installing) -
Its still downloading from your server. Since this AM. Half way done.
-
... it should go at 160 KBP/s (1.5MB upstream).
I got the hotkey driver HALF working - I can control the brightness, but not the sound or anything other than the brightness -
I already tried this beta to my customize desktop dual both with windows Xp and its a mess. And then when I try to boot to my xp. its gone it did affected the bootsector. Luckily i know what to do. From there I deleted this windoze 7.
ohlip -
-
Rob,
There is a reason I run XP SP2. I don't have to "fix" anything. If its not broke don't fix it! My two cents.
CAP -
My attempts ay resolving the hot keys on the cf-74 have been unsuccessful due to the message “the Panasonic misc driver was not found” when I try to load some of the drivers
I installed the misc driver but I still get that message
Without Panasonic official support and drivers it’s a bit of a crapshoot
And each model and mk# will have its own glitches
Some issues will be common between models but
You’re working on a cf-30mk-1 and I am testing on a cf-74 mk-1
Alex -
I know what to do as well
I am testing this beta on a laptop that I do not rely on
The problem with doing this is that I dont use the cf-74 as much and so its harder to compare boot times etc
I cant really do an accurate benchmark comparison
I have two separate caddies and hard drives for my cf-30 and cf-19 and I might try messing around with W7 in one of them
The problem with that is that I have totally different hard drives on them
32gb and 64gb Samsung ssd 80gb 7200 and 320gb 7200 so its not a true comparison

HIP HIP HURRAY!!! I found a driver/software package for Sprint that is now working with Windows 7!!!:
http://www.robsnetworks.com/toughbook/CF-30 Windows 7 Drivers/
I used the 595U drivers (Vista) (Normal Sprint connection manager, NOT SMARTVIEW). EVDO works great too! -
Few more updates:
1) The show desktop button has been moved to the FAR bottom right corner of the screen - I LOVE THIS
2) if you have a window that is not full screened you can simply move it up and let go to full screen it, or move it left or right to half screen it - VERY NICE FEATURE
3) The fact that you can choose to change your background every x amount of time is cool (I think you can do that in vista as well)
Video coming soon -
Video here:
http://www.robsnetworks.com/toughbook/CF-30 Windows 7 Install/Video_011609_002.3g2 - just open it in quicktime -
getting it from the windows site.

Small update:
1) My Netgear VPN doesn't work to initialize a tunnel on both IE8 and Firefox 3.0.5 on Windows 7... it works fine on XP and Vista Business. -
One more update:
Sound isn’t working, even though the driver is apparently installed... I’m trying the Vista drivers now... -
Okay, so I installed the Vista sound driver and nothing
... no sound... I’m done for today
-
Also their is no mail program ANYWHERE...
I think that has to be because it is a BETA from Microsoft, as I can't imagine that they would produce a new operating system with no email program
-
-
Hmm.. a new MS operating system.. is this.. a GOOD thing?
-
Or maybe... just MAYBE... (I'm going out on a limb here) it's because Outlook suXpress has been regularly trading places with Internet Exploder as M$' BIGGEST SECURITY ISSUE for about the last 4 incarnations of Windoze, & they want people to actually LIKE the new OS... They'd probably leave IE out too, but Ballmer is D@MNED if he'll ecourage ppl to install Firefox 3...

Once upon a time, there were 2 Chinese. Now look how many. -
I lost my Colt AR-15, Kimber .45 and my other guns in a tragic fishing accident today. I guess they can't take them now.
p.s Quicktime and Safari are like swiss cheese in the security world. apple has trouble with them. -
Yeah, I'm really concerned that my hard earned retirement is about to be put at risk now that the fiscally responsible Republicans will no longer be in charge. The Democrats might even want to give those greed head slime balls on Wall Street a bunch of my money to fund obscene bonuses. I'm so much better off than I was 8 years ago I can't even begin to sum it all up.

Windows 7 - All the suck of previous versions, but none of that syrupy aftertaste! -
If I didn't have so much fun making custom pcs and playing windows games I would only use Linux.

Windows 7 - The adventure begins!!
