A convoy of fully-armed trouts?? :D I was wondering why "coffey" was shootin' instead of hookin' 'em.

Gong back, has anyone tried running W7 on a 28S without hang-ups?

Since we are this far OT. Believe it or not, Vermont still has a fish hunting season. You can actually shoot Pike and Pickerel in the spring in Lake Champlain!

You need a combination hunting and fishing license. I'm not making this up! You haven't lived 'till you have spent a day freezing your a** off out in the flooded woods with a bunch of half drunk hunters shooting high powered rifles and hand guns onto water at a very flat trajectory.

You have a chance for success if your model has vista drivers available

Well I installed windows 7 on my cf-19 for a dual boot. All of my drivers work perfect except the touchpad driver which stays loaded but locks out somehow so i have to use the microsoft driver. Everything else is working like a charm.

So far this OS is great. I like it much better than vista. The battery life is much better and most of the taskbar features are awsome. This OS seems to be the clean up OS after vista. It runs much smoother and quicker than vista and does not seem to hog as much as vista does. This is only a beta with a lot of work that probably still has to be done. So far i am liking it a lot.

This maybe the first OS that i will buy from microsoft.

    TEO,
Thank you for remembering. Regardless of your politics, you have to be proud that the most powerful country in the world is able to show its best side to the rest of the world. When we have a seamless transition of power like we did yesterday its an example to all that democracy can work and continues to here.
God Bless America, I'll reserve judgement on the politicians.

"Oh, and talk about baffling: The core accessory programs for an operating system these days - e-mail, address book, calendar, photo management, movie editing and instant messaging - won't come with Windows 7. You'll have to download these programs yourself from a Microsoft Web site" -told you

    Coffey,
Now that is not a bad thing! If it is in fact a lean OS and you get to choose what you want to add for your apps I'm interested.

DITTO! DITTO! DITTO! I am all for that. Quick question for you guys.. I downloaded the ISO off of Rob's server. I have never used an ISO before, so is it just as easy as copying the file to a DVD and im good? Or do I have to copy it as a boot DVD? And last, any recommendations on software choice for burning ISO's?

I use nero on the burning software. You will have to burn it as a bootable DVD. If you just burn the iso to the dvd it will not boot.

There might be some freeware programs out there that will work but i have only ever used nero for my burning.

I have heard a lot of good things about Nero. I might just have to give it a try! Thanks for the info on making the DVD a boot, I was thinking that was it.

I think you’ll like Windows 7 Cap. After you get it loaded up you have an almost blank desktop. Just a recycle bin and a “send feedback” icon. No gadgets, mail, messenger, make a video etc. Just load up what you want and leave the rest off. So far to me it seems like a stripped down version of Vista that works. Of course this is a beta so who knows what the release will be like…..

Just got my weekly email from ZiffDavis. They ran their bench mark tests on Vista, W7, and XP. XP kicked a** on both the newer systems. Still a beta, but on any computer which I use just special apps, no email, no internet, no office, etc, I still use W2K and am not changing! There are actually benefits to XP over W2K for a general use computer, but I have CF-27s whirring away doing complex work quite happily as long as you don't bloat them up with Redmond's idea of what you need. I am leery of any "improvement" from M$ and I have been living with their upgrades since DOS 1.1. Just my opinion, I am hoping that W7 is a good product, but I fear it will be a hog just like Vista when it all shakes out. It just says something when the biggest software company in the world spends millions of dollars rolling out a new OS and within a very short period Panasonic has "Vista downgraded to XP" on the configurator. Microsoft's OS rollouts are based on the stock market, not on real need or real improvements.
    Enough! Stop me!
    CAP
Edit: In fairness, the Ziff/Davis article did point out that W7 was designed for multiple processor machines, ie more than 2 which is all we have available. Apparently there are "Core Quattro"? and even more processors just around the corner.

Well I loaded up Windows 7 on my Spare HDD - I have a spare carrier so I can just swap them over quickly.

Can't get the touchscreen working - can't find a driver but it found my internal wifi and Bluetooth straight out of the box. Actually was the easiest Windows install I've ever had. Nice look to the GUI.

Can't run Aero but then again I'm running on my CF-28 with 1GHz processor and 3/4 Gig memory so I didn't expect to.

So far I would say that it runs about the same speed as XP SP3.

Edit - I guess I'm never going to get the graphics working correct as Intel never made a Vista driver for the 82830M and the XP one won't run in compatibility mode no Windows 7.

Windows 7... hmmm. I've totally given up on Vista as it's a piece of s.h.i.t.e, and Xp is actually very good. Is W7 meant to be the next OS after Vista? My next toughbook is going to have Linux installed on it (just like my Opentec 'Openfire' milspec system).

I wouldn't dare try to download a full OS using wireless as even though I have a 7.2 mbps (theoretical!) HSDPA net service, Adelaide is so congested with 3G wireless traffic that it constantly drops out (back to normal WCDMA or even GPRS), DNS lookups constantly time out, and downloading anything is almost as slow as a 33k6 or 56k modem would have been in the 'old skool' (not more than a couple of years ago!) days. Back in Sydney I've got 512/512 DSL (since I have a web server running there) and downloads over that are much faster. Bit ironic...

    Craig.

There's your problem! You're usuing freaking HSDPA :(... you should be using CDMA REVA - and more specific, Sprint!... I could easily download a 2.4GB file through my sprint card...

    Well I have had enough

I am going back to xp and vista on my 2 toughbooks that I was testing w7 on

Increased battery consumption, not able to dim the screen, and finally the last straw was yesterday when I was snipping on an Ebay item, and explorer 8 cleared out cookies ,so I had to put my user name + password in again, all in about 7 seconds, which of course was not possible so I did not get a bid in

I want my internet explorer 7 back :)

Lol had that happen on 7 also! Overall though it seems better than Vista so far. Seems to have a little less bloat and a bit more refinement ( if that term can be used with MS apps). I run Mac OS X on my home machine and XP pro on mobile. Both work just fine, so I will remove Vista when the beta expires. As far as I'm concerned OS X is the best OS overall. But thats all just opinion.
