    Hello,

Has anyone used Windows 8 on a Toughbook CF-52? I know it comes pre-installed with a Windows 7 OS, but I wonder is it worth upgrading to 8.1. I'm still a Windows 7 user, and have been for sometime. Please any input would be helpful!

    My main concerns are:

    1. Is it better for business?

    2. Can I install Legacy applications?

    3. What is all the fuss about the Start Menu?

Stick with 7 until 10 is released on July 27th.
It will be a free upgrade.
10 is much better than 8.1

Welcome to the Panasonic Toughbook forum
I have tried W8 on a 52 and didn't like it so I went back to W7. I have install W10 on my 53 spare drive and so far I do like it and it's free.

"3. Old people don't like those modern square buttons"

and that it why there is "classic shell" .
sadly , i do not think that any amount of noise from the "restless native section" is going to convince M$ of their counter productive (_ahem_) "desktop" .

    MS did listen..
8.1 included a start button as does 10.
The Metro Desktop does work "ok" if you have a modern touchscreen or digitizer..Our Toughbooks generally don't..
Metro does require time and patience to learn..Personally I can't be bothered.....Yep, I'm getting older..
Classic shell works and works well.....

I'm sure someone could invent rubber spheres to replace the normal donut shaped tires on my truck, but why?

I got a problem with CF52 mk1 and Windows 8.1 the last year when I tried it (around summer). There were no video card drivers and it was stuck on low resolution with 16 bit color depth. Probably there are drivers available already but it was a real trouble when I wanted to test it.

I hope it will be OK with windows 10 :)

I had Win10 on a CF52 recently and the video drivers worked perfectly.

This video can help a lot with some pro and cons of both OS's. It doesn't explain much about the drivers but, hopefully this will be helpful for you guys.

I have Windows 10 on a CF-74Mk4 and it works OK,its a demo for all the people who are really disappointed in Windows 8. From a local repair/seller point of view, everyone hates 8.

I'm wondering why Bob Johnson is posting a Win 7 vs Win 8.1 video in June of 2015. It seems pretty obvious that 8.1 is going the way of Vista this week.

Hey, guys. We'll get on that! I've already talked to Solly, our video guy. If Solly had been working here back in 2013 when 8.1 first came out, I'm sure he would have made that video then, but he started less than a year ago, so let's give him a break :p

I like 10. As in MakuluLinux-Aero-10 which is in BETA at this point.

Writing this from a Foxtrot Delta CF-19 installed system running on a FHGAXAM. (touch screen)((Delta is a digitizer)). Linux doesn't care.

Ugly has never impressed me whether it's square buttons or not.

    I see a lot of ("it's O.K.") as regards W10. O.K? Not picking on you Kerry. :)

Cleve (UNCNDL1) and I have been testing different Linux systems to keep our older TB's alive. MX-14 works for CF-29's....all of them. MakuluLinux9 and above work great on CF-30 and 31...especially with SSD....quick with platter drives too.

This CF-19 boots in 22 seconds with a SSD....yeah I know the front buttons don't work but the desktop is not ugly.

My next post will be #2,000 so thought I would raise a few hackles with this one...just for fun. :D

    jayburd...you'all take care...

OSX (Mac OS) works really well on a CF52 mk2...except for wifi...I could not get a wifi card to work...
If I could have figured out the wifi card, I would still have OSX on a CF52. I like OSX better than any Linux distro that I have tried to date.

Thank you safn1949 I must agree with you. Windows 8 is a great OS on a tablet but not some much for business. :)

I think many do like it. It's what they have to give up. M$ knows enough about me now. I am not giving them any more info.
