wanted to know if anyone here has the winxp recovery cd for the cf-28????
i have only used windows 2000 and only re-installed with the recovery cd'd till i lost one of the cd, but now after afew guys have said i be better of with xp, am moving on -
am trying to make my own copy so once finish the toughbook will run on only 80mb of ram leaving the rest for ultimate speed,
with automatic pre-install of all the navigation software i use,
all my games and full tweaks to make it run even faster, will mate the cd a once bootable with full details so wouldnt have to wait around for it too install just to enter my name, password and product key the cd will do it all for me and once done i will be left with the perfect os and wont need to waste time doing updates or re-installing my favorite software

am going to start making the software middles of august caus thats when i am on my holidays, and if anyone wants i can make them copys too....

also has anyone here made there own software cd's, used any tweaks i should include on the cd, also software which i shouldnt include, do let me know.........

Are you talking about "streamlining?" (I think that's what it's called.) I tried that once but never got around to installing it again... Then sold the PC I did it for.

You should get HDD Health... It gives A LOT of info and uses no resources. It free too... The BEST kind of software.

Explain about using only 80MB of RAM to run XP while you use the rest for programs. How does that work?

I didn't think that the recovery CDs actually contained the OS. (I could be wrong of course.) I thought it was just the drivers and the factory programs.... Like Panny handwriting and other utils.

well most recovery cd do have the os on them, like the windows 2000 cd set i got with my toughbook, has everything onthem to make like easier, just need to insert one cd at a time and once done you have a brand new out of the shop toughbook with all the software it came with,
most recovery cd's come in a set of 2/3, for example if it were a set of 3 then 2 cd would have software and drivers while the 3rd cd will have the operating system, meaning most times you buy a laptop of ebay more chances there will just give you the drivers cd and keep the os cd for them self,
i have made afew winxp os which barely use the ram, most winxp install can be run of 64mb of ram but you wont have all the features and to have all winxp features you will need min of 128mb ram which when windows starts up stucks all away, leaving you too use up the virtual memory,
what i did was take winxp take out the useless software, plus service no one ever really uses and from the space i created insert office 2003 into the setup cd, once done my entire os on cd was only 258mb big, and takes half the time a normal install of windows take, also by enhacing the teaks through registry and the services the os see 80mb as the most ram so doesnt suck the rest up leaving me the rest too use with any of my software....
no worries once i made one for the toughbook i will mail one too you so you can try it,
it will just be for the cf-28 all windows drivers will be removed and instead i will insert the cf-28 drivers leaving you nothing to do once set up is complete you can surf the net you gps and do what ever you pls........

I've been dealing with Windows since the old DOS and Win 3.0... And even before. I've never heard of what you talk about with respect to minimizing RAM use for Windows while having it available for other program use. I'd love one of the CDs if you can/will make one! I'd be more than happy to Paypal you some cash for it too.

One of my favorite sites is www.tweakxp.com. They have a ton of useful useability and system tweaks... I guess I have more reading to do!

By the way... Have you fooled around with other OS's such as Linux yet? I have a boot CD for that but haven't played around with it yet. I was actually thinking about a dual boot, Win XP/Linux setup... They say that if you switch to Linux and give it an honest chance... You'll never go back to Windows. Plus... It's FREE! (See above!) I guess I have the time to play... I ought to do it and see for myself!

no worries will make you one for august, just let me know ur model number so i can include all ur drivers for you, when you have time pm me all the software you will need on the cd and i'll make it up from there, dont worry about paypal dont think it will cost me much too send...
i have used lynux in the past, but at work everyone uses windows so never really change over seems like a really good os, but mind you havent installed it onto a toughbook so no idea of how many problems you will get,
what i mean with problems is getting drivers to work...
best think is read up about the lynux os you want to install and first get ur hands on all drivers before trying the install....
www.tweakxp.com that is a great site,
but now imagine if ur tweaks were in place before you installed windows and all service etc you disable through tweaks were removed in the first place, you will save alot of space plus hasle......

Dam, wish I know about that info before lol, when I got my new HDD and caddy I had to install XP from the floppy as the setup was on a DVD disc and I only have a cd-rw drive. So made the floppy Boot disc's on my main PC, And when it was all setup, network it to my main PC for the flies transfier of all the stuff I wanted on it, even word07 had to be done that way.
