Okay... It's been a while since I did a Windows XP Pro installation. The old days of just loading XP and hitting Update are long gone.

I have a recovery disk for a CF-30 MK2 with XP Pro SP2... So I go ahead and load SP3 via a CD I made months ago. I click on MS Update and it just scans and scans... But it never updates.

Before I loaded from the recovery disk I had loaded regular XP Pro and manually installed all the drivers... When I loaded SP 3 I just got the red X saying it wasn't working. I did a lot of reading about different fixes but none of them seem to work.

I thought that by loading from the recovery disk and immediately loading SP 3 that I would avoid issues. I don't get the red X anymore... But it still isn't updating.

So... Anyone care to enlighten me? What am I doing wrong? Or not doing right?

Is it activated? Shouldn't matter, but???Different wifi card that the default drivers can't operate?

Try copying the whole update sp3 cd to the hdd

Another idea ...SP3 cd maybe going bad..

Recovery Installation doesn't need activation... Internet works fine...

I don't think the CD is bad... I downloaded SP 3 to the HD last try... I installed it from the desktop with the same result...

Just had the same sort of problem w/an HP I was working on for a friend. I handbombed SP3 onto it, after installing XPPro SP2 from the HP restore disc. I have used the same SP3 numerous times w/no problem. When I went to do the MS updates, it just sat there searching. It turns out the w/the default setting to automatically download and install updates, it was trying to do that in the background while I was trying to do a manual update. I change the update setting for XP to notify me of updates, rebooted a couple time for good measure, then tried Windows update again. Success, if you call 6 hrs worth of updates success. Hope that helps.

Well... I was just doing a little reading. I hear the work-around is to turn on Automatic Updates... Scan it and let the ActiveX control to install... Then turn off the Updates... Then go to the MS website and tell it to update. For some reason (based upon several places I read) it can take 45 minutes for the first batch to scan.

I'll keep you posted. It is in my shop now on the hard line... I turned wifi off.

I found when I re installed to my CF 30 Mk1 I first needed to upgrade to Internet Explorer 8 and then upgrade Microsoft .Net Framework 1.1 and then Windows XP Service pack 3.
Now Windows update works as it should.

This happened to me also on my CF-30 and also my 52 . It took me the whole weekend to figure it out...figured it was just me :spinny: . The thing is I never had this problem last year, I would just load the restore disk and then the update CD.

Unfortunately... I'm sick and I have a CF-30 and 2 CF-29s for prior customers... They want XP Pro installed. I really don't even feel like messing with it but I have to get the CF-30 out in the next few days.

The last several XP builds I had to load SP3 manually... But I never had this type of issue. I'm not the conspiracy type but I think MS is behind it. This is BS... Now it is hung up on the 16th update.... The SP3 security update.

EDIT - It appears to be working... Just WAY Slow! It is now on 25 of 108...

isn't one of the requirements of sp3 that sp1 already be installed?

When using the XP recovery DVD I manually do these updates then turn on automatic updates. This will let Microsoft to install a new version of the Microsoft update.

    WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe
    IE8-WindowsXP-x86-ENU.exe
    wmp11-windowsxp-x86-enu.exe

The pain will begin after you install net framework 3.5 an up. When booting you won’t be able to open IE…There will be a delay before anything will open.

Just let the PC sit ON…perhaps over night and this delay will go away.

Yes... The recovery disk had SP2 already... I just needed to add SP3 and (as it turns out) IE8 first...

45 minutes after it started... It is still downloading and is on update 52... And I have Verizon fiber optic... It's not the connection speed.

Well... I woke up this morning and the Genuine Advantage tool was waiting for me to okay it... Then it finished its installation. The rest of the updates came lightning fast. Maybe it was just an issue last night.

We'll see... I have 2 CF-29s to build later in the week.

    Thanks for everyone's input!

I just finished running windows update on both my CF-30 Mk1 and my CF-29 Mk5.
I installed only the high priority updates.
Working time on each of the computers was about 2 to 2 1/2 hours.
    I guess this is acceptable.

I've seen this and discovered it was the Windows Genuine Advantage [sic] update with a dialog box waiting for me to Accept terms of service. Don't know if Express mode is supposed to bypass that or not . . .

    Ken,

I am with you... I install it for customers so they don't have issues in the future... It's all legit so it's all fine.

The GA install was waiting for me this morning. After the nightmare last night... All is well today and it is about ready to box up and ship out. Just running it through its final paces and then I'll do a battery recalibration before shipment.

This update thing on XP happened I think 4 months ago when I installed a fresh copy on my M34. I also cannot update and keep scanning and scanning for nothing. I then go to intel site for auto detect for update but those site also need an upgrade of browser to. So, I manually downloaded IE8 and installed, then after the update from intel wedsite. Its suddenly popup the windows update.

Yeah... I am trying to do that now. I just finished build two CF-29s (MK4)... Loaded the OS, then installed SP3 and now am trying to download and install IE8... It is just churning saying it is downloading IE8... And nothing.... It just scans and scans.

Apparently more hair pulling is due tonight... And I can't drink Jack to help me out since I have to replace my front door tomorrow. (Transom, sidelights, everything!) So this may have to wait until Sunday...
