Ah! It would seem only a bit of my message posted.

What it should have said was...

Which is best for a CF-29/CF-30? In a situation running office applications and GPS software, which is a smoother experience?

I've heard that Vista is a lot slower than XP Pro due to the graphics it uses. Also with SP3 released, I'm leaning towards XP.

I would go with xp. Alot of places are continuing to support that OS. Also, its prettymuch common knowldge that vista has flopped. Here's my recommendation.

Unless you need vista's compatability in order to connect with other systems/servers that may be running vista's platform, there's no reason to go out and buy it. If it comes preinstalled on your laptop, its fine, but if you can switch to xp, it'll feel better.

Windows 7 is suppose to be a huge success compared to vista, and many people are waiting xp out as long as they can to make the leap to W7, skipping the vista nightmare. So, if vista came with it, and thats that, it should be fine. If you own XP, then it will be a smoother experience.

Your CF-29 (depending on what Mk it is - BIG variation in power from th Mk1 to the MK5 - actually, the Mk5 isn't even the same species as the Mk1) may run Vista if you max out the RAM, but it'll be slow as pudding (Vista requires at LEAST DirectX9 compatible video). Your CF-30 Probably will run Vista OK, except for anything graphic-intensive; plus I'm not sure if any model of CF-30 has a video controller which supports DirectX 10 (Really necessary for the nicely crippled multimedia features of Vista).

Bottom line - if you use it for work, you'll find most of your favorite software still runs fine under SP3, and if you don't use IE or Outlook on the WWW, you still have plenty of security. Vista's software compatibility list is small; most of your older software is not compatible. (M$ sez for security reasons; I suspect cuz they wanna force you to buy more NEW software, since they hosed themselves taking 7 years to realize LongWhor'n aka Vista).

Here's a short list of pros & cons from TechRepublic:

    http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/5100-10877_11-6152414.html

I've beta-ed Vista in 32 & 64 bit versions for over a year; I'm no gamer, so I couldn't flipping care less about DirectX 10; and Micro$uck sold out EVERYTHING that would make Vista a decent MultiMedia PC to the major studios, essentially charging $450 for a "Multimedia Edition" OS that won't even play Blu-Ray properly due to it's bloated DRM package.

As far as I'm concerned, Vista is the best case to date for Ubuntu...
