    Hey all,

OK, long story made short: I bought a 29 MK5 from eBay for $320 in mint shape with 12000 hours on it (not a typo). The touchscreen died, so I was looking for a solution and decided a 30 is what I needed. Well, on another thread, it turns out 30s have only been out 18 months or so - I thought it had been four years. I contacted Panasonic, and mine is still under warranty! I'll send it back to be repaired.

So, if your MK5 is broken, contact them, it may be a free repair.

I heard that Panny stopped covering the touchscreens... Or at least their extended coverage of it. Also.... I was told by Panasonic that they only cover warranty claims for the original owner... Did you get the name of the person you spoke to by chance?

I just called Panny on the 29 - still under extended warranty until 3/2011. If they honor it...

I'm curious, how did the conversation go? I'm sure you didn't say "I just bought this laptop on eBay."

I've been in the computer industry long enough to play the game.

I gave him minimum info, only what was asked. I acted as though I was the original owner assuming he did not have that info (I think he may have, but was not letting on he did). We'll see if a box shows up or not.

I called on the phone with the same routine to see if it is under warranty still and until when - that person (Matt) gave me the info I wanted, so I suspect Richard (the IM guy) had access too.

The last time I tried it.... They specifically asked if I was the original owner. I can't lie about that. I guess it depends on who you get...

But it still ain't over till you get it back free under warranty. Be prepared to get a call from heartland with a "Quote" to fix it.

I hope you can get this done for free... Don't get m wrong. It's just that I have been shot down on numerous occasions.

Why does original ownership count in regard to the warranty? Does the warranty become null and void when a system changes owner?

Who/where would do this sort of thing here in Australia (if anyone knows)? Heartland don't support users outside north america as far as I'm aware.

Their warranty stipulates Original Owner only.

I have not received a box - so I'll have to assume he (Richard) was jerking me around. I was never asked if I was the original owner.

When they say you are getting the box the next day... You get the box the next day. When I sent my CF-30 in for work... They were here the very next morning at 9:30 am.

Warranty is for original owners only per Panasonic.

For other countries I would call the toll-free number in your country and ask.

    SiliconTi,

Did he ask for your address if he didn't then he must have sent it to the original owner of it.

I'm pretty sure that's a US-specific thing - Toughbooks in Europe I'm pretty sure will service units as long as they are in warranty, doesn't have to be the original owner.

Other regions (Australia, Canada etc etc) might fall either way.

So, your only problem with your unit is that the touchscreen stop working. Am I correct?

For the fast I've got a unit with non working touchscreen. I think I solved the missing link. Then followed again by another two recently on which all of them fixed but not just by cleaning the clearance outside. Are you willing to dismantle your LCD for the purpose of ixing it up?

I'm sending my unit back to Panasonic for repair. It has been a weird trip, but with some help from Toughbook, it is on its way.

    I'm confused...

Have you verified that it will be fixed under warranty? Or are you doing this out of pocket?

Thus far, all indications are that it will be covered under the extended warranty.

If it was not, I'd just disable it in the BIOS and live with it.
