Some IBM laptops use a compatible power supply, PN 08K8204. IBM Thinkpad A, R, i, S, T and X series. Be careful, they are not all the correct voltage! I have one which has been charging my CF-30 for over a year with no problems. They are good quality and very compact. You can usually find them on eBay for under $10.

THESE are the ones I get and have never had an issue. I have been using some of them for years in my shop under daily use.

Correct... They look almost like OEM... But they do not show Panasonic on them... I've had some plugged in off and on (mostly on) for over 1 year with no issues and have never had a bad one. The BriteOn adapters are the ones to stay away from... There is a reason they give you a 45 day warranty! On the 46th day.... Kaput! (If they even last that long!)

the only thing that I see with the one you posted toughbook is the plug isnt a 3 prong grounded. Or is the one that they send grounded? I like to have expensive electronics grounded.

Plus does that one have the "shoulders" that fit tight in the port on the side? I like how the stock one does that so if you drop it on the corner it wont break off inside.

As the Capt'n said I'll go for an oem IBM adapter as a matter of fact I am using two of them for cf-29 and cf-18 as my adaptor. Even on my CF-19.

I was getting ready to order a Motorola-Symbol Power Supply to replace my clone unit when the Captain posted this and reminded me that I had two good Thinkpad Power Supplies going to waste from dead notebooks!

Thanks for saving me some money!

EVERYONE PLEASE BE CAREFUL! Be sure you have the right IBM adapter if you choose to go that route. Some of these are 20 Volt, bad ju-ju for your Toughbook! Only buy the 16V, I've got them in both 3.5 and 4.5 Amp models.
Like Rick I have a couple which have been plugged in working for over a year with no problems. What I like best is they are less than 1/2 the size and weight of the Panasonic ones.

PERSONALLY, I've seen hundreds of laptops come by my office with bad motherboards because of generic AC adapters being used. Is it really worth possibly frying a $3000+ toughbook by not spending the extra $10 measly dollars on an OEM one?!?!?! I don't think so...

Rob, The IBM adapters I have cost an average of about $4.50 against $45-60 for a Panasonic one. I prefer them to OEM mostly because of size. If you want OEM, I've got brand new in box CF-29-30 adapters for $45 and one brand new CF-19 adapter for $30.

A lot of good ideas and thoughts. The link I posted have twin plugs without ground... So that may be a bit of a downer... But with the resiliency of the Toughbook... I don't worry too much. Like I said.... I've tried several adapters and these have never let me down.

And Cap is right... WHATEVER YOU DO.... Make SURE you get one that is rated for your machine. Overvoltage is bad news and can take from the highest high to the lowest low if you fry your laptop!

I have a couple of the IBM ones with the right power rating, I kind of avoid using them though just because I dont like anything but OEM, I bought some 29s recently from an ebay seller and the generic ones he sold me frayed around the tip in under a week of use, no bueno

My IBM Branded power supply works and charges fine. I like Thinkpads and when IBM owned them they were a quality machine. Frankly Lonovo seems to be trying to continue that quality and support.

While they are not in the same league as a Toughbook when in comes to toughness, I am confident that they have mastered the relatively simple art of building an adequate power supply. ;)
