If your function keys are working, try pushing Fn+F3 holding for 1 or 2 seconds.

safest bet is to reload windows from scratch. function-f3 will just cycle displays(hardware), you have a software problem

Try booting to safe mode and changing it from there.

Look at a picture of a swan, it's soothing - anybody got a picture of a swan?? :)

Try hitting F8 while booting and choose the "enable VGA mode" option. That should load a generic video driver so you can get back in there and fix the problem.

COA 'should' work with an OEM XP cd. I've installed using OEM \i386 folders from the CD, and the existing COA.

Sounds like the program you used may have screwed up your drivers or display settings. The issue sounds similar to those where the M 13" LCD was used on a P or S model (or vice -versa), but if windows looked fine (?)...
Were you changing the screen settings in windows or in the application you were running? I'd suggest checking for issues with the program and windows before using that one again. Kinda sounds like the app tried to switch to DOS mode and kludged it up.

You might try a DOS floppy boot and see if there is a C:\i386 folder on the HDD - then try to run WINNT.exe from there, the dos windows installer. It might give you an option to repair the existing installation.

your machine didn't come with an OEM cd?? anyway, I don't think you should have to pay for another copy of windows, the machine came with a liscence on the bottom. Word to the wise, every computer enthusiast/geek/hacker/whatever should have a copy of all the software he or she uses including Operating Systems nearby.

changing resolution might work, on a desktop it involves futzing with the monitor controls.

on a laptop, I've never seen this problem before.

Pigfrog... What were you doing when all this happened. You said that you "were playing around with it" and then all this happened... What exactly did you do?

I think Pappy has a great idea. Try using the "Fn" + F3 option key to bring it out. You didn't say whether you tried that. That option has screwed me up before I finally figured out what I did. If it is pushed the right way it will do exactly what you are describing!

Failing all else... Go ahead and try reloading XP and then all the drivers. If you need any help... Just ask!

I was trying to adjust the screen dimensions.. I have a program I use to fire professional fireworks and when the program is open the lower part of the program console is missing its like the screen didnt fit...

I went into display properties, settings/ advanced/ adapter/ properties/ device usage and selected do not use this device (stupid!!!!!)

    I tried FN+F3 nothing
    tried safe mode (gets stuck)
    tried last working config
    tried vga mode
tried every option in boot menu

tried to switch to external monitor in bios ect...

got to get back in there and fix it Or load XP again....

You could try the repair option... Or trying booting up with a slave monitor and see if that works. Then you could go back in and change it.

Sounds to me like you need to make the lower "Start Bar" disappear when your program is on. You can switch that in the properties box there.

    Try an external monitor.
