Seeing as the original thread has been closed, I thought an update would be prudent since localised flooding has me isolated at home for the next few days at least...
A few months ago a new Optus network 3G-only (HSDPA/UMTS) tower at Bucketty was commissioned so where I live now (in the lower Hunter Valley high on a ridge near a trig point) gets quite good UMTS signal coverage from that tower, and I have no problem using my Virgin 3g mobile broadband SIM in the Huawei e169 USB modem with any of my toughbooks.
I've decided to have another go at seeing what my two Sierra aircards will do.
So far I'm trying the 881 card (one branded as AT&T), and I downloaded a more recent version of the Sierra watcher to the one I last tried out in 2010 when I still lived in South Australia. It's 'R10.11.0.0 build 2849'.
However the key problem, of being unable to set the network number even though I can manually set the APN, remains, and when I save the profile details the default network number that shows up (505002 - incorrect for Virgin) is replaced by 000000 and is un-editiable. The correct network number is 50502.
There was a post in the original thread in which this link was provided:
Zibri's Blog: FREE Sierra Wireless Unlock Download! (881, 881u, mercury, usb, usbconnect)
Who has actually made use of this and can confirm that the software is NOT any sort of virus infector and really is an 'unlocker' for the range of Sierra cards listed on the page at the link?
The 881 is now a discontinued product so it's unlikely Sierra would be interested in offering any support, but I may try out the other card I have here (an 860 - generic one) to compare what happens.
Who else has been working with these cards to get them functioning here with Australian telco's?
Craig.

Ok I have now tried it with the 860 and the result is the same - it will not permit editing the network number field in the profile.
