I have the same model, CF-28PTJGAQM, Works perfectly with XP Pro.
Get the drivers from Modly here:

Without a floppy or CD, you'll need to get a USB enclosure for the harddrive, and then format it from your desktop. Install the DOS system files to it and make it bootable, then copy the XP i386 folder to the HD ( as c:\i386).
Reinstall in the lappy and boot to dos on 'C:'. From the root (C:\ prompt) run c:\i386\winnt toi start the dos portion of the set up, and go from there.

There are several threads which describe this in more detail, just search the forum. Also a Google search for 'Windows i386 install' should bring up some hits.

    Good luck.

Has anyone tried to install XP from a bootable thumb drive?

For hinges you can look on ebay or go to www.heartlandsi.com

At least, not thumb drives. CD & floppy are ok so you could run windows from a CD if you really really wanted to. No write though.

    Zero -

Are you telling me that there is a BIOS version for the CF-28 that supports boot from USB CDROM? We've been lamenting the absurdly high cost of the MediaBay CDROMs and using workarounds like copying the i386 folder to HD using a USB enclosure on another computer as long as I can remember BECAUSE nobody had found a way to make a setup disk boot from anything BUT the MediaBay CDROM, except by booting from custom-cobbled floppys & cross-platform boogery...

If you have such knowledge... PLEASE. GIVE.

I've got hinges. When you say "set".. do you mean just two or all six?

Nope, you're right. Must have either been using internal CDD or thinking of another model. I'll play around with it some more as I have time.
