I have just replaced a faulty MB in my CF-18. The new one boots up ok if I remove the battery, power supply and unplug the onboard battery for a couple of hours.I can enter the bios ok, but if I shutdown and restart all I get is a grid of straight lines on the screen. I have tried disconnecting the screen cable and using only an external monitor but the same thing happens. Looks like a faulty onboard graphics chip? any suggestions much appreciated.

Try removing ram if you have any installed.

Thanks, yes that was the problem. I tried it in another cf-18 and it refused to boot, must have been damaged when the MB fused. Found a 256mb which is ok.

You know, similar problem with my 19 mkIV and a paired set of 4 GIG RAM cards. Top one was acting up and did not know why my computer kept resetting. Tons of BSOD's, different ones all of the time. I finally took the top 4 GIG out and put in the OEM, voila, problem fixed! I was thinking virus cause I was in Turks and Caicos when it started to happen. Went so far as to scrub the disk and re-install only to realize later it was the RAM all along. Future thought for BSOD's is to pull RAM and put OEM in to see what happens.....Great post by CAP to simplify everything, REMOVE RAM!!!!

Thanks, but if you read most of the older posts on this forum you will find that we have been recommending removing ALL non-essential hardware and add-ons as the first step in any diagnostic process for years. I just gave the short answer because I have had a similar issue with the same display symptoms recently.
