A while ago I was playing with my toughbook and it preformed bad so I restarted it. After that it wount start. Bios start an then I get black screen saying:
can´t start windows because the following file is missing or corrupt.
    System32\drivers\pci.sys

Thats when I boot from my SSD. I tried to put in the old HD and got something similar. I tested both in another laptop and I can read them.

I´m thinking of getting w..7 and do a new installation, will that fix it? You think?

    Help please,

Btw. Toughbook, I´m here quiet frequent but haven´n logged in for some time since my cf-18 went sick. And please refer to me as He, the Lady is actually my red Land Rover that I bought the TB for.

    Ahhh... Makes sense now....

It sounds like a scrambled boot sector or something...

When you say you tested in another laptop... Are you saying another CF-18? Or are you hooking them up externally?

Finally, the man behind the mask is (somewhat) unveiled. Kinda like finding out the true identity of the Lone Ranger (sort of). ;)

I would suggest you try booting to an XP CDROM, then enter the Repair Console (You'll need the Admin Password). From there, type chkdsk c: /f (yes, it's command-line) If your missing pci.sys is caused by a cross-connected file or invalid FAT Table entry, it should fix it.

This is NOT what I'd call a permanent fix; these issues are often caused by a failing filesystem or a hard drive that really needs a low-level reformat; either of which will kill your Windoze install.

If it works, you will at least be able to perform a system backup before you nuke & pave. ;)

    external to a d/hell

It doesn´t want to boot from my xp cd, so I think I will back up my files thru the external case and the put the ssd back and nuke it.

thanx for your advice, I´ll return...
