i have used 40gb HDD with linux mint/xp side by side. Now i bought 320gb new HDD
and made installion with linux mint 11 distro(its best by the way). I can use live cd
without problems, but after installion i restart and black screen, nothing more....why?
Bios recognice new hdd allright as 320gb, and live cd partition table is also ok.
I thought that i have to make several partition, and made two 120gb partition, and left rest of space without use....new installion and restart....black screen again...any ideas?

    Thanks a lot buddy.
Normally I load XP on the disk to factory specs.
Then when XP is working well I install (in my case 11.04 (don't like it graphics too jumpy for CF-29, 10.10 (it's a good one, and for the older chipsets 10.04 (seems to run best on CF-29 Mark 1,2,3.) alongside the XP OS. I let Ubuntu set it up and write the boot menu.
When you have the live version running take a look at Xorg.0.org. Look for any lines headed with (WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.
This is a strange one to work live but not off of the HDD. Couple of things.
    1. The download is corrupt.
    2. Your Grub (actually Grub2) is missing or not being found by the system. Possibly to do with you manually setting up the partitions.
This scenario. When you do the partition thing Windows takes over and writes the boot file. When you re-start Mint starts first and can not find the boot file. Something like that.
Let's start with that. Remember CF-18s are not young anymore Graphics wise and you may have to drop back to an older version of Mint.
Several others are running Mint and they can jump in here anytime.
    Any takers?

    Jeff

Found this. For what it's worth and I don't think this is YOUR problem.

    Tried again couple of times,first one big partition 320gb...no luck...then i made 2X120gb partitions and one 80gb + / + swap by hands...no luck.

This is getting nerves and now im trying to make HDD clone.
dd if=/dev/sdc of=/path/to/image this make image to the home directory, and:
dd if=/path/to/image of=/dev/hdx these commands transfer all data of original HDD to desired directory, and then it can used to new hdd. It will make copy bit by bit, so its very slow. Hope its works..
But if it does not work, i thing i have to dig that Xorg file.

I can only help you do what I know how to do.
So I recommend you start over.

    1. Do install of XP. Factory restore is best.
    2. Do Mint install letting Mint set up partitions.

Meanwhile look at this: Ubuntu Forums - View Single Post - [ubuntu] GRUB RESCUE prompt

I just loaded it and ran it and it works fine for gathering information on the disk.

Ubuntu 11.04 was key to success! I think that linux mint cd had corrupted bootloader..
