Is it openable? The only thing I'm concerned about are cheap cells, and inadequate cell protection circuitry - two things which make for a Li-Ion fire. And you don't want to be anywhere near that even for a cell phone battery!

I guess it looks cool... And it certainly may have a long battery life.... But it kinda takes the "Toughness" factor out of the equation with all the stuff velcro'd to the laptop.... Just my .02

Gawd that is one insane system! I would be absolutely delighted if you could contribute those pics into the Rugged Computing group I've got going on flickr.com and I am definitely interested in that battery setup as it'll enable me to use my CF28 independently of my car battery and not need to worry about the car battery going flat when the engine isn't going if I use the computer a lot.

There has got to be a commercially-produced military-style rugged variation of this sort of thing in existence but perhaps with the fickleness of Lithium-Ion charging any military DC power solutions could use NiMH technology which is much safer. And most of us can't afford to strap large solar panels and regulators, etc to the roof of our car.

    Mmmhmmm...

We had the entire family over for Xmas, money's tight for all the same reasons we know, (My wife has lost about half of her music students - guess parents have trouble paying for music lessons when they're one of the 500,000 who lost their job last week... or the 500,000 the week before that or the week before that, etc... I feel lucky to have work at all) someone ran into my car (fixed now), and baby dwagon-boi Marcus is eating us out of house & home (CRASH-BANG-BOOM - Whoops - another growth spurt) when he's not busy zooming all over in his walker... heaven help us once he starts walking. Add a few service calls most days and you have the short version.

How's stuff in your little corner of the globe?

    mnem
No, no Marcus - you can't eat daddy's laser mouse. He's using it...

    Craig,

They make commercial external batteries that will work for the CF-28/CF-29... OR you could get two NEW batteries (One main and one media bay) and that would help... Or you could get all three!

I have a CD drive in the media bay but yes I've heard about the media bay option for a second internal battery. Neat idea for a system which doesn't require an internal CD drive.

Do you have any leads on the commercial external battery products you mentioned?

    Craig.
