My new purchase CF-28 has a 56k modem that I don't need or want, give me some advice on what to replace it with. I have an external wifi card that I use in 1 of the card slots but it does have the factory antenna on the left top corner of the lid. Let me have your thoughts. If I can take out the modem and replace it with something I'll sure consider it. Thank you.

    Hi new2cf-28

you could take out the modem and put a internal wifi card and mod the arial to work with the card.

There is info on this forum some ware on how to mod the arial.

I will have a look to see if I can find it and post a link here or may be one of the other forum members konw where it is and post a link to it.

    Guys, Please

**READ BEFORE POSTING** **The Ultimate Toughbook Resource Thread**

If you would just take a quick look at the first thread on the forum!!! You would by now have full information on years of research (some might call it tinkering) and knowledge and you might be discussing the fine points of EnGenius vs. Atheros cards instead of "can I add wifi to my CF-28". We really need a way to make that thread mandatory reading, maybe like some EULA's make you scroll to the bottom to proceed to the next step.

I'm a farm equipment mechanic not a computer technician. I have no idea what most of the items that are talked about here are but I want to learn. Sometimes it helps to get a little more of a personal answer. Thank you.

New... It take a LOT of reading to learn about these. You can literally spend days/weeks reading up on all the stuff you can do with these. Helpful repairs, mods to be done, etc. But all the info you need to know if available in the stickies at the top of the forum.

Pretty soon you'll be posting about your mods! ;)

That's my point, the answers on the stickies are personal and definitely not aimed at professionals. Hundreds of us have been guided through pretty complicated repairs, updates, and modifications by the few real professional members we have. The personal answer is to point you in the right direction so you get the whole picture. In this particular case the personal answer is to point the non-computer tech at the place where he will find the simple solution, the one he is most likely to use instead of the most complicated solution, needed only by those who want to do more than just connect at home, work, and decent hotspots. In this particular case you were originally sent to a discussion of internal GPS switch problems. Welcome to the forum!

New, we were all in your position at one point. Cap was trying to explain (and with a great deal of composure I might add) that many, if not all, questions that newb's generally ask have been asked MANY times before. None of us are trying to push you or your question aside, but MOST of the questions could be answered if newb's just took the time to read the stickies. After, and only after, you have read ALL the posted standards and your question has still not been answered or covered previously, you can then ask away. This column (and a few others like it) is not the only thing to occupy the time of the regulars. In many cases, it may be hours or days before we have the time to look at this forum, let alone take the time to answer all the questions that arise. Welcome to the club and let us know when the sick feeling of being sucked into the vortex takes over! :D

I used to be in your pair of shoes but like all things good, it's worth taking the time to run through the stickies and/or search the archives (which I still do).

Flaming is best left on the pit and gimme a good holler when the ribs are done! :D

There is so much info that has previously been discussed ,especially on the cf-28 that its always best to read the old threads first

I'm sorry if you feel flamed, that was certainly not my intent. You posted a question asking about the second easiest upgrade, after adding ram. You were directed by a well meaning member to a place you should most certainly not have gone for basic WiFi information. The mod you are interested in can cost as little as $20 and requires only that you have one good screwdriver and enough electronic skill to change a lightbulb. Again, that was my point. When I first got to this forum around two years ago we didn't know how to do this! We tend to be terrible when it comes to threads drifting off topic, I'm sure the oldtimers will not feel flamed when I say that we are the worst offenders, although we have some newer members who have picked up our habits quite rapidly. We have tried to clean up our act for the benefit of new comers, hence the stickies. A lot of people have spent a lot of time trying to make the basic information easy to find for newcomers.
As for the tone of my response, hang around a bit. I haven't kept count on the number of times, since the stickies have been up, some new comer has asked, as their first post, for a source for Toughbook drivers. Less often, but not infrequently, the first response comes from a newcomer or a forum diver recommending one of the driver search sites or some source other than Panasonic. You'll note that I signed my post "CAP frustrated" not "Cap pi$$ed off". Again, welcome to the forum.

Well I think that it is important for folks to understand that this is not the official Panasonic Tech Support website and that all help received here is done though the good will of the participates.

It is all voluntary and no one should expect any more then the participates care to provide.

I personally have nothing to say but good things about the assistance I have received here.
