Welcome to the forum. Is your hard drive detected by the computer? And which operating system are you putting on it? We need to know these things so we can help you out the best way we can

    1. Do you know it is a good, working drive?
    2. What OS are you installing?
    3. How much RAM do you have, and is it all good?
    4. Do you have a spare drive that is KNOWN good to compare?

And... What is the exact model number is this?

BTW... YOu may want to make sure that the hard drive connector is FIRMLY pressed into place... It doesn't seat itself when you drop it in there. You must press down on the black conector that comes out of it and press it firmly down onto the mobo.

I'd run the memtest on it just to rule out the memory being bad and just for the hell of it put another hard drive into that computer and see. I've actually had that happen to me before and wasn't sure why it did that. I do get alot of ID10T errors

It sounds to me you have trouble on the mbo. Ok! see if the connector on the mbo. is ok, clean it up if necessary by blowing up a compress air and inspect all the pin maybe has some corrosion or damaged on it. If its all ok! get back to us again.

Ok. So you have ruled out the HD as being bad. So, now you are down to the onboard RAM; the HD Caddy connector being bad; the cable to the MB being bad; the MB being bad; and oddly enough, maybe even the CMOS battery being bad. You can rule out half of these by putting that HD, caddy and all, in another 28 if you have one (or maybe a friend) and running MEMTEST as PsychoThrasher suggested. However, all that being said, I really think Toughbook was on to something. When you install the HD w/caddy in the 28, you have to physically push the black connector down to make sure it seats properly and then lock the caddy in place. Can you tell if the caddy is making good connection with the MB? Give it a GOOD look and let us know.

Would the connector be loose or the HDD caddy connector be bad even if his hard drive shows ups in the install but then the install fails? I'm not saying anyone is wrong (cuz you're prolly right :D ) but I just wanted clarification in case this happens to me because i'm sure it will eventually

That makes me realize that you should check your install CD for streaks and stratches, in case you haven't already :p

All the things I listed are theoretically possible to produce the results he is getting. I am sure there are more, but that's my list and I'm sticking to it... :p

Well this may sound off the wall but do you have a battery in it, I have had 2 cf-28's not load XP because the battery was bad, removed battery and partition, format, ect.. no problem
