    wrench-

    Firstoff, welcome to the forum.
If you do a search for CF-28 CDROM you'll see a lot of posts on this very subject; however, the short version is no, there simply is no place to buy one of these cheap.

OEM price is approx $225, but they're all out of stock pretty much everywhere & that's for the original CDRW; the DVDROM/CDRW Combo is more like $395 (check me on those numbers, willya TB?), also out of stock pretty much everywhere. As a result, aftermarket price is still in the $65-$100 range for used, and whatever the seller can get for new.

Most of us simply suck it up & buy the used ones for the caddy & replace the drive with what we want; if you need to install Windows, search for "toughbook install windows" to find threads on how to install Windoze without using the factory CDROM & workarounds for the "No boot from USB" issue with CF-28 BIOS.

Well this seller is selling a cf28 cd-rom drives and has the feature for a best offer.

    EBAY ITEM:280203449107
But it does have a $20.00 shipping cost so I suppose that could be a deal breaker.

This seller was selling these a month ago or so and it was talked about in this thread ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=209778) that the seller was accepting offers as low as $65.00. Hope this helps.

I actually found the combo drive for $99.95
    Ebay item # 270214521721
It is cheaper then the $130-$170 I have seen for a combo drive.

Will a CDROM from a CF-27 not fit the 28?

The cf-27,28, & 29 cd-rom/combo drives/dvd drives are all the same from my understanding. They all use the same caddy/connector

I purchased from this seller very recently(drive isn't here yet) for $65, so $85 with S&H, still cheaper than everything else I found..

I'm in the same situation looking for the second hard drive unit. I will not pay $500-600 for a hard drive module (and stuffed with a 20-30gb disk) no matter what. It's insane.

I have a question for you experts on this if I may.

If in fact the CF-27/CF-28/CF-29 multimedia bay devices are compatible has anyone tried connecting a hard drive into a cd-rom housing just to see if it was feasible?

The CD Rom caddys from the 27, 28 & 29 are identical and will work in all the models. They changed the design for the CF-30. To my knowledge... Nobody has modded the CD caddy to hold a hard drive.... But it must be able to be done...
