Are the hard drive/ battery covers the same on all cf-28s? Or does the mk 1 model use a smaller cover?

This is covered in the CF-28 sticky.... The MK1 units are shorter and will work in the MK2 & 3... But the MK2 & 3 will not work in the MK1 model..

If you throw a MK1 into your MK3 you may need to add a little padding (Velcro or similar) to push back against the bottom plate to keep it in place.

Rick, I believe he was asking about the actual cover, and the answer is, no they are not. The MK 1 cover is quite a bit different. I might have one I saved for Kevin (Gravitar) and never got a chance to send him.

The Mk1 is cast differently to allow for the use of their funky keylock system; a bilateral multiaxial tumber number that costs way too much, especially since it can be easily defeated with a butter knife and doesn't even bother to lock the lid.

Gnarly keys - +3 nifty factor. Craptacular lock? +6 on the 'shnugget scale...

Yeah its just because i was looking at some hard drive cover plates on ebay and they don't specify which model there for, I know the mk 1 cf-28 is smaller too, but i was thinking the cover might fit

Ooops.... I saw hard drive and stopped reading.... So much for being in a hurry and reading all the way.... Yes... They are totally different.

I shipped all my stuff to Springfield months ago.... Though he might call it "junk" more than "stuff"..... ;)

Is there any way to tell the difference between the 2 covers aesthetically?

I don't have time to take pictures right now, but
From the outside, the most obvious difference is the MK1 cover has smallish, semi-circular feet set in from the edge quite a bit and small rectangular feet right on the edge, while the MK2-3 has larger, round feet which are further out toward the corner.
The "RELEASE" legend on the MK1 is raised while the MK2-3 has the legend engraved into the plate.
The locking tabs on the MK1 are small and set in behind the front edge, and the tabs on the MK2-3 are much wider and protrude out from the front edge.
The sealing lip on the inside of the MK1 cover is a stiff but flexible plastic adhered to the metal, it is cast into the cover on the MK2-3.
I have a MK1 cover in mint condition if anyone needs one.

I have a mark 3 that didn't have a cover and a mark 1 that did have a cover but it would not fit on the mark 3. I was however able to swap the entire bottom from the mark 1 onto the mark 3 so I now have a battery cover. The corner bumpers did not work on the hybrid though so I had to leave those off

Forgot to mention that the mark 3 drive caddy dosn't fit very well now. It does work but dosn't clip in very well.
May have to swap my hard drive back to the mark 1 caddy

The easy way to tell a Mk1 from a mile away is that only the Mk1 has a lockset in the middle of the power switch. Other telltales are related to the coloration of the handle and touchpad, but those can be changed out easily... the Mk1 lower body is cast differently to accommodate the lockset, so it's pretty hard to change that as an identifier.
