alright guys, i know you must get a ton of questiongs about the hdd caddy but being a newbie who sign up a couple months ago, i still have to ask. i have both a 1000mhz and a 600 mhz cf-28. i have the 600mhz fully running and the 1ghz missing a hdd caddy. i know that i cant swap the hdd caddy into the 1ghz from the 600mhz but i want to know why. i tried it and it seems to boot but since i installed the xp on the 600 i get the blue screen on the 1ghz when it boots. i just want to know why it would not work. any answers would be fine. thanks guys.

Actually, you have that backwards. The CF-28/600 caddy is "universal donor" type - it will work in ALL CF-28s. The CF-28 800/1000 mhz caddy is a bit too thick to fit properly in a 600; it requires some modding to make it work.

The reason your CF-28/600 caddy will not boot in your 1000mhz laptop is Windows itself; long story short, it KNOWS it wasn't originally installed on the 1000mhz, and will refuse to boot on any machine not identical (or nearly so) to the one it WAS installed on.

I recommend you get another HD (so as not to destroy the Windoze install on the original HD for your 600mhz) and install it in the caddy, then put it in the 1000mhz & do a full install of Windoze (Or better yet, Ubuntu). ;) You can find all the Windoze drivers at:

When you use the 600 caddy in the 800/1000Mhz models the caddy will sit lower in the drive bay. What I do is to take one of the metallic cloth covered pads and stick it on top of the drive caddy to keep a constant pressure on the caddy to keep it forced down in the bay. You can take the pad from the side of the LAN card for this use. That way... When you put on the bottom cover the pad touches the cover and keeps pressure down on the caddy so it doesn't move around and stays pinned where it is supposed to stay.

Here's a quick answer... none! HD Caddies, from my experience, rarely are auctioned alone and when they are, they are often pricey. (In my comparatively limited experience, I've seen them priced at b/t $80 to $130).

I see systems bought as much for the components themselves as to have a "working machine."

Hard drives and caddies are removed by entities selling them (law enforcement, gov't, etc) before the sale in the name of data security.

While we're on the subject, would someone kindly notify the IT departments that they CAN remove the drives and put the caddies BACK IN? :eek2:

My CF-28 from blindcenternv came complete, they just DoD wiped the drives in-situ. It was nice to get the unit with a 'not messed with' drive and caddy.
