You will need a complete caddy/optical drive
The floppy caddy will not work for an optical drive
It is a panasonic part ,and will cost between $40 to $60 for a cd drive/caddy on eBay
The cf-27 and cf-28 and cf-29 use the same caddy

    Hunter -

    Welcome to the forum!

All the above are pretty common questions covered in detail in the CF-28 FAQ; we recommend a known good Kingston module there. Your Cendyne module MAY or MAY NOT WORK; the CF-28s are pretty finicky about RAM.

Post a part # and if anyone here has used it successfully they will reply as such. Otherwise, stick with the Kingston PC133 listed in the FAQ.

Hunter... Welcome to the forum. The CF-28 is about the easiest laptop to modify and is fairly forgiving if you make a mistake... But don't try to do anything other than swapping drives and adding the CD Rom unless you are familiar with working on small electronics and are fairly proficient at soldering.

With that said... You DID get a steal on that CD Rom. I was eying buying 10 of them they are priced so well. You can easily modify that CD Rom into a DVD R/W with one solder point and a new/used IDE DVD module. It is the easiest of all the mods.

As Mnementh said... read the CF-28FAQ and you will learn a lot about your new laptop. I have all the User & Service Manuals as well as schematics and PC Board layout guides if you need them. Just PM me your email address with what you need. I also have a ton of parts for the CF-28 if you need anything.

There is a rotary lever on the bottom the ejects whichever drive is in the Media Pocket on the left side. Push the latch toward the center of rotation, rotate the lever about 120 degrees and it will unplug and eject the caddy about 1/2 inch. Just swap in your new CD caddy and you're all set. Hot swappable too.

No... No need to take anything apart to install the CD... You will see when you get it... You just open the port cover on the left-hand side toward the back and slide the caddy in. You need to make sure that it is firmly pushed into place. You will know when it connects as the laptop will read it and show in My Computer.

Will email the schematics in a few...

Just to clarify and add to this, you will first "Eject" the floppy drive (which is in its own special caddy) and then "Insert" the CDROM (which is in its own special caddy). As previously stated, the "Eject Lever" for the floppy/CDROM is on the bottom and is rotated along the groove. You must first make sure the dust cover door is open, then rotate the lever to eject.
