I've been reading so many threads on here on both the cf-28 and cf-29. I have a 29 and love it, but it looks like the cf-28 is much more user friendly for moding it. It seems to have more room and use inexpensive off the shelf items for making it packed full of options. The 29 seems to be less open to extras being stuffed in it. So other than processor speed I don't see any big advantage.
I first thought it just needed more time on the market for the mods to be worked out but I see from reading here that it is more a space issue.
So all of this has led me to think about getting a cf-28 and maxing it out. I still have 2 pII machines in regular use so I'm not afraid of an 800 or 1000mgz machine.
Then I would make the next leap to the cf-30 when they get down around $1500 for a well apointed model. sort of skipping the maxed out cf-29 model and being content with my bare bones model.

The only mod that I see causing pause is the GPS. Given time, Modly, TB, and others WILL get it resolved. This I know. Everything else we have done to the 28 appears to be either included already in the 29, or an easy add on...
-
The only reason mods for the 29 aren't abundant is because fewer of us have them. It's only been in the last 3 months that anybody here has really gotten one.
By the end of this year, we'll have everything on the 29 that we did on the 28. -
I moved to a 29 only about three weeks ago...The biggest difference that I have noticed is the brightness of screen. In my work (outdoors) the brightness is significantly better. In addition, the 29 touch screen is not yellowish like on the 28s that Ive monkeyed with. Im really happy with my 29.
-
I'm VERY happy with my 29s too. The screen brightness is the biggie for me. Being able to read it outside is a huge plus! The speed, as stated, is not really that much of an issue but being able to put more RAM into it does make it a bit faster.
We'll get around to doing the same things on the 29 as we did on the 28. I just need a good 29 to install aftermarket GPS in... I'm looking for a good deal now. Then I'll get to work on it. I'm sure it won't be too difficult. -
If the GPS for the cf-29 Is already good, why would you want to Have an aftermarket version added?
-
It is more cheaper than the stock one and also more no. of satellite signal instead of twelve you can get 20 or more depending on the engine that you gonna install. And the most important thing is, the fun. -
So the max numbero n the eternal is 12? Still though How many people Track 20 Sats? My USB one has a 20 track ability and yet only finds 8. lol
-
It means you can track more satellite than the stock, good enough when you are in a poor condition. Poor condition explain a lot like canyon etc.
-
Whats the big difference between the CF-29L and the CF-29n? I notice you have an N model and I have an L
-
The only difference I can see is the N has TPM 1.2.
Otherwise... not a clue. -
isn't tpm some kind government computer tagging device?
or is really good encryption software that only the feds have a key to.
once this is turned on it can't be turned off as far as I know.

There are only 30 satellites in orbit... Since your view of the world doesn't wrap completely around the world... I doubt that you would receive more than 8-9 satellites ate a time on a GOOD day. 4-6 seems to be the usual.
-
My take on multiple channel GPS systems.
Once you get enough satellites in view, you will have information about every other satellite in orbit. The GPS engine will have those on hand incase signal can be gained, and another loses signal.
If you are traveling, it ensures that you have location. This is more important for airline setups which rely on GPS for landing assistance.
If you have 8 satellites though, you're doing well. The maximum you'll ever see in view at one point in time is 11. Eventually they will add more satellites. -
The thing about GPS is that "it is what it is" at any given time. I use it daily, in really dark conditions, many times without any visual reference, except the GPS monitor. It either works (good) or it doesn't work (not so good).
The quality of the signal is important to folks who use it for precise measurements (although there are more precise means), but for most of us; what you get is good enough to be useful. I'm not real certain what the importance of getting a signal inside of a residence or building is. If I need directions to a place to eat or drink, there is always google earth.
I guess that all I'm saying is, get out and use the GPS and worry less about the number of satellites or signal strength.
cf-28 vs cf-29
