    fellas

i have an upgrade project coming up for a local pd that wants to get a llittle more life and speed from their cf-29's. I would love to use a 7k hitachi like I have but we all know the problem there :( I hate to go thru the trouble of replacing the stock 4krpm hdd with a 5k hdd so i was wondering if any of you folks have any hands on time with an SSD drive in a cf-29. If so can you reccomend ann?

    thanks

What are the space requirements for the PD?

I can't imagine that they would need blazing speed. They only run a few different programs.

With SSDs, perhaps they're concerned about the wild temperature ranges?

But with SSDs, you're looking for a PATA/IDE drive, which unfortunately is harder to find. You should also look for SLC, single layer cell, type memory. They are the fastest available and don't wear out as fast as MLC, multi layer cell.

The cheap stuff on eBay (Trend, etc.) are garbage. Memoright, Mtron and Samsung are brands that seems to pop up time and again when reliability and speed is needed.

the space requiorments for the pd are probably minimal they only run a cad program MS office and maybe some other basic programs. I have yet to get my hands on one and speak to the guys about issues they have other than being "slow'. They have prob a half dozen cf-29's

I doubt it's the computers that're affecting performance.

I work for the D.C. Transit system and we have our own police force running Motorola MW-520 and MW-800 terminals in their cars...

The performance is limited by the 9600 b/s Radio modems that're in their cars. The Motorola VRM 650.

It's like being on Dial Up all over again, except worse... You've gotta deal with radio coverage problems and only one person being able to use it at once, because there are no phone numbers, it's just a single radio frequency into a tower...

Did I mention 9600 bits per second.
