anyone know how i fix this? like an idiot i stuck some cheap chinese internet radio gizmo into it followed by a nasty smell of burning and subsequently dead - i want to revive it - luckily other usb port was not affected. any clues? - mine is a cf29-4 (if that identifies it sufficiently) -

How are you soldering skills ?

I could do the repair, it's a skill level 6 out of 10

If by chance you have not shorted out and destroyed the controller chip

You will need to remove the bottom cover and remove the main motherboard

Then unsolder and replace the usb port
Note, there is a retainer over the usb port that covers both the usb and audio ports

Cost for a used part from me is $5 ,basically enough to cover airmail to Germany

    Oops

I just looked again , and yes onirakkiss you are correct
I have the board by itself and being fairly small in size thought it was a daughterboard

I updated my post and add a warning as the touchpad flat cable is a pain to remove and replace without damaging it

    Thanks onirakkiss

The thing that keeps me posting and checking it here, is that even more knowlegable users , learn new ideas here

And we learn them most often from forum contributers with less than 1000 posts

That's brilliant - thank you both - i can solder and pull things to bits and probably have the nerve to remove and reposition a nasty ribbon cable - very grateful for the spare part and ready to part with money - is paypal good for you, Tomcat? The reason i want the second usb working is to do a webcam fix similar to this: ebay no 160465630863 but any further ideas about or where to locate a good thread would be much appreciated.

Incidentally, in the mission of sharing knowledge, i bought this laptop and was not happy with the screen quality since it was 'hazy' and had strange internal reflections going on. Actually i was very unhappy as it hurt my eyes. So i went in and thought about my touch screen requirements and realised i was simply a mouse man at heart. Accordingly, i stripped off the touch screen layer and came away a very happy man with now an excellent bright and clear screen at zero cost.

    Thanks again both of you.
