I was letting a freind use my toughbook and I noticed that the temps were getting high and NHC was putting out warnings. When I got to it it was running at 198 degrees f. I let it go back to idle and the temps still didnt go down. What finally made it go down is pushing on the bottom. Has anyone else had problems with that? What is a good thermal paste for these since they have the thick foamy stuff on there now.

    That’s hot

I wonder what the cpu load was, it must of been working hard

I have wondered about mods on these
The stock way of heat transfer could be improved
I would think that a copper shim with artic silver would work better than stock

I believe the case inside pushes against some of the components that heat up and allows the stock material to cool, I would suspect if your case is bent it is probably not making the proper contact and allowing it to become too hot. The toughbooks esentially use the entire casing to disperse heat through conduction instead of using a fan.

Check to make sure that you have all 4 rubber pads installed on the bottom. Check to make sure you have ALL screws accounted for on the bottom plate.

It sounds like someone opened it up and didn't put it back together that well. Just because you open the bottom doesn't mean that you can simply button it all back up. The thermal pads are VERY important. They need to make contact. You need to make sure that bits and pieces are not falling off to lodge somewhere else in the PC. There are a lot of things to check like that.

I would put some high-end silver thermal paste where the thermal pads are to ensure a good reseal with new thermal grease/paste to disappate the heat to the bottom shell.

Or remove all traces of the old thermal pads on and install new ones... They cost $8 a set I think.... Cheap insurance...

I would assume that these come from Heartland? Anyone have the part numbers, or will they know?

I would also like to get the part numbers for a CF-29 mk2 or, as I've read here somewhere, a mk5, which is supposed to fit and be more durable.

    TIA, Glen

You can buy thermal pads and paste from most major computer stores such as newegg.com, tigerdirect.com, frys.com... etc.

Yeah.... But they aren't the same thickness... (Ask me how I know...)

The part number is... DFHR3445ZA "Heat Dissipation Rubber"
    The size are 1/2 x 1/2" squares

Alright I took it apart and the pads were all smushed. Just for now I took the pads and squished them into little balls and added some generic thermal paste and then I re assembled it Now the temps are normal. thanks Guys.

what are the dimentions of the pads? importantly the thickness? and what are the differences between the CF29 and the wonder CF30 parts?

Just asking as all the bits are US based and companies make a right meal out of posting small bits internationally!
