    Hi,

I picked up another cf-29, It didn't have a hard drve so I ordered a drive caddy off of ebay and now I need to go from there. I have windows disks but I was hoping to find a place to buy the restore disks. I have a mark V that came with the disks, can I use thse on a older model (CF-29CTKGZDM9) or will I need the specifice restore disks for that model?

    TIA

To answer your questions, first of all no your MK5 disks will not work on the MK1 model. Each MK had its own set of disks. Second sometimes the restore disks are available from www.heartlandsi.com. You might check with them and see if they have those disks still available. You can also check ebay sometimes OEM restore disks are available for sale. If all else fails you can use another windows installer disk assuming you have a vaild COA on the bottom of your computer that matches up to what you're installing. All the panasonic drivers are available for download from the various panasonic company sites. See the CF-29 FAQ thread for the links. You will just have to download them one by one and manually install

If the COA is still intact you can use the key with an oem w2000 disk to reinstall windows
You will need to install the drivers from the Panasonic download site to finish off
I have seen these disks for sale on ebay occasionally but you will need to find w2000 for a mk1 cf-29
The restore disk checks the model number in the bios when loading and will only work on the same series, and it also has to match your w2000
XP restore disks will not work
If you need xp you will need to buy a key and disk for that

I didn't realize the recovery diskswould need to have the w2000 also. I do have the origonal coa.

I have a mirrored hard drive out of my MK5 from before I upgraded hard drives. Could I just stick it in and then reload the drivers for the mk1 from pannys sight?

Not really legal to load one coa on two laptops
Hardware quite different between them , good chance for BSOD errors before you even have a chance to update drivers

It may be a gray area... But you can buy a COA on ebay as it comes with part of some equipment... You cn remove that COA and apply it to the bottom of your laptop and use that key to install XP Pro... The going rate for a COA on ebay is about $25 - $45 deending on what you get with it.

Sure beats bying the whole OS just to get the COA...

Not a bad idea, I was actually wondering about COAs and can they be taken from one machine, say that is being pulled from service or destroyed and applied to another, sometimes you see a COA that says 2-CPU also, does that mean it covers two computers/installs?

Microsoft will (of course) now tell you it is ILLEGAL to move a COA from one system to another; yet, only a couple years ago, they offered technical assistance under warranty to help you when upgrading MB/Processor.

Microsoft's licensure with major manufacturers prohibits the transfer of "OEM" COAs from one piece of equipment to another; this is how they get the licensure for approx 1% of retail.

I say, what is the difference between changing the contents of the box and reregistering a build with what is essentially a new PC?

As far as I'm concerned, if I buy a PC with a COA on it, that PC, COA INCLUDED, is MINE. MS shouldn't have the right to tell me how I can use it AFTER THEY SELL THAT LICENSURE.

This is what happens when you let lawyers into the legislative process; they will corrupt ANYTHING to their clients' ends.

I think that is why they sell you the piece of equipment that just "happens to have" the COA attached. I used to do this in the CF-28 days... But 99% of the CF-29s that I deal with already have XP Pro.... But on rare occasions I have 1.2GHz models that come with Win2K I need to load manually... Well... I have a SysPrep Setup that allows you to enter the COA... But it is all legit as the COA is on the bottom of the laptop and is in the laptop.... What more could you want? (Besides the newest CF-30?)

I think there was something on ebay that they could send you the COA but they also had to send you a piece of PC equipment to make it MS legal... Or something like that.
