so I bought a new cf-29 rubber keyboard. I've never had anything apart on the tb but with the help of the manual posted on here it was easy to fit. I was very apprehensive to stuff those flex connectors in under the cover but it works fine so I guess I did a good job. One thing is really bugging me though. The keyboard around the space bar are is pushed up a bit and it has alot of flex in that area. Is this normal? I made sure all of the tab are tucked under, also there is no tab in that are as there was on my regular kb. There is some of that flex cable folded over under there and I could probably stuff a couple of mm more of it under the cover but I can't imagine it helping much.
If the flex was taken out of that area I could probably get used to it. I use this in an open top vehicle and it some times gets a splash or a drizzle and lots of dust so I though this would be better.
Are the transmissive ones also water resistant?

disclaimer; I am not a keyboard guru...
That being said, it sounds as though the ribbon is pushing up against the keybard as you said. I have swapped 2 or 3 keyboards and the most sensitive part is the connectors to the m/board. I have always just pushed the ribbon back in at the front until the visible slack is gone. That part of the ribbon should be tough enough to take moderate pressure, at least it was on the ones I did. -
I have the excess ribbon stuffed under the slot thats there for it but I still think it is causing at least part of the flex. It is pretty neat with the 5 levels of brightness, but the flex is making me nuts. I guess I need to learn to type softer.

i'm convincedthis flex is from the connectorspushing up around the space bar. They are tucked as much as they will go under the slot for them, bt they are not creased but looped so can they be creased so they will lay flatter? I thought I better ask before I mess with them.
Thanks -
The emissive is waterproof too... I use one one mine. It is the best keyboard I have ever typed on. The only problem is that I type some key combinations so fast they don't register all the time... So I need to go back and put in the letters. But I still prefer it over any other type!

Toughbook, I dont mean to correct but when researching on CF-29 and their company the Emissive one is SEMI-Waterproof, There are 3 by what the manufacture say they carry. Regular non waterproof keyboard, Semi Waterproof Keyboard, and Rubber Waterproof Keyboard. Atleast that is what they said. I'm sure the only difference is the Semi-waterproof doesnt survive a hurricane. lol
Huntler, I had the same issue as you on my rubber keyboard so I use Carpet Tape which is similar if not the same as they use on their keyboards, this keeps in in place wonderfully. 3M makes carpet tape at your local hardware store. -
Hmmm... Where did you find that? I read that it was waterproof... Just not gooey-coffee-donut crumb proof... The rubber keyboard you can wipe up... The others will shed water with no problem making them all waterproof. (Since the laptop is sealed) The difference is that the sticky type drinks don't clean up from the regular keyboards the way they do from the rubber keyboard.
Check out the Panasonic commercials they show them pouring water on the reular keyboard. I believe others here (In a drunken stupor) have more than repeated the test. -
dou! Carpet tape, why didn't I think of that? Great idea. Is it ok to crease the the cables or not? I have 5 transflective keyboards on the way. I don't know condition yet and I think they cf-28 era but I do know they have 3 connectors and are supposedly 5v.

I read it from Review of the CF-29 in Japan, Basically the COmpany claimed 3 types of keyboards, 1 normal none waterproof, then Semi waterproof backlit, and then the Fully Rubber waterproof model.
Like you said Keyboards even the regular can TAKE a beating, I think what they did was for Military Reasons, example is In the Jungle with Rain and Mud, which keyboard would work PERIOD? Obviously its the rubber one. I think ALL their models are Water resistant from Spills and Rain. I just think they cant warranty it as such.
I Bought my Rubber one specifically for making sure my Keyboard would work, Dirt etc mixed with Water can mean ruined keys. Also I noticed on ALL three keyboards the Sides of the Regular and Emissive are not SEALED taped. The Rubber is. So I SUPPOSE if you were in a DOWNPOUR for all day that Maybe the others MAY crap out on you?
I liked the Emissive keys, but I CANT afford the chance in my line of work of my laptop crapping out and I CANT get the keyboard replaced, so instead of keeping an extra I just got the rubber one to be SAFE.
I got to say the CF-29 Rubber keyboard is Awsome. It Has 5 settings and is really Visible, the other cf-28 one I HAD wasnt that bright. Plus you can turn this one off! What I read and this may depend on the manufacture date the CF-28 only had 3 settings, and didnt turn off causing the batteries to drain more.
BTW I have a Fujitsu Keyboard and it basically works with spilled drinks etc, many a time I have done that. lol So GOOD quality keyboards even IF not waterproof will work, but for how long? Plus the Stuck key issue like you said. ;-0
cf-29 rubber keyboard installed lots of flex?
