is the CMOS battery anything special in the M34, or can I get something off the shelf?

I have not changed a battery on that model but they all use a 3v Lithium cell
Size permitting you should be able to solder if nessesary the pigtail connecter on to a genaric cell bios battery
I have done this on cf-25s and cf-71s

Just remember no soldering allowed on the replacement battery
You can kill them with heat or cause them to explode
Just solder and join the wires together, as the bios batteries for laptops are not clipped in like desktop batteries they have pigtails attached
