The MEIWDS software only works with Windows 2000 and Windows XP (not Win7 or later). It has a limited color palate (8 bits?) and only runs at 800x600 display resolution. The PC should automatically change to that resolution when the remote display connects to MEIWDS software. Only certain wifi cards get a reliable link, it uses the B version of wifi. Panasonic sold a kit for this (PC card wifi plus software disk). I have found older Cisco PC card wifi works well, also the Intel 2915 shipped in later CF-29 and CF-18 models worked reliably for me - Intel 2100 and 2200 were not reliable.

    Hi Springfield,
I am French in Canada (Quebec) and I bought a Panasonic Toughbook CF 30 with Windows XP Pro.Why XP? because I use on my boat a Toughbook CF vdw07 HBM.
But on the CF 30 I have not the MEIWDS, moreover I do not know if my CF VDW07 HBM is a transflectiv or high bright screen. So I have any questions. Could you anwser them?
    1) Is my Toughbook CF 07 a transflectiv or bright light? I would not crashed my wireless display with a bad MEIWDS software.
    2) Do you have a good MEIWDS for my computer and would you accept to give me a copy? I do not know if the software on Panasonic support is compatible.
    3) Is there a special procedure to install the CF VDW07 and CF 30.
    4) Six years ago I used my CF VDW07 with a Dell PC but with a router but on my sailboat I must to control my electric energy and I am hunting devices who consume too much and I removed this router. Could you confirm me if I can use this two Toughbook without an extern router?

Thanks in advance for you anwser.
    Best regards

    Hi Jean-Luc,

    1) CF-VDW07M units with part number ending in *M* are transflective. They can be Mk1 or Mk2- check the BIOS version. The Mk2 gets a more reliable wifi connection. It is possible to upgrade Mk1 to Mk2 software, but difficult.

    2) Not sure, can check. There is an OEM adapter kit for VDW that comes with MEIWDS on CD and a PC card, and should work on most laptops of that age.

    3) VDW Mk2 should be able to connect to any laptop running XP, using the right wifi link. Your CF-30 should be able to connect to a Mk 2 VDW with its internal wifi (Intel 2915). If it has trouble, I found the old Cisco Aironet PC card adapters work well - AIR-PCM350 series, possibly also the slightly newer AIR-CB21AG-A-K9 might also work. For some reason I'm thinking the OEM kit PC card might be similar to Lucent PC24E-H-FC.

Setup procedures for the VDW and for the MEIWDS are pretty detailed. There is a write-up if I can find somewhere to post it.

    4) Yes they can connect directly using the MEIWDS software. Setup the VDW using the Menu button, Option -> Wireless Connection -> pick a setup name, then AdHoc and setup the name and IP address. Infrastructure needs a router, AdHoc connects directly to another wifi "B" adapter, which also must be in AdHoc mode.

Hi, Thank you very much for your anwser.

    1) I know now I have a transflective but I don't know if it is a MK1 or MK2 because I don't know where to find checking the bios version on the CF-VDW07. The informations founded are "version firmware: V2.01L11EM11. Is it for MK1 or MK2? There are no model number and no serial number on the screen.

    2) The network type indicate : infrastructure (open) so, if I understood I can use only a router. Is it exactly?
    3) I saw 4 profiles in the general tab. Profile 1 and 2 are infracstructure, and 3 and 4 Adhoc, I can chose 3 or 4 to try to connect them.

    4) In this case is it necessary to have and to install MEIWDS (in the good version for my tranflective CF-VDM07) in my PCcomputer Toughbook CF-30? Or can I connect both without this software from the CF-30?

Sorry for my questions but I am not a computer expert and my english is sometimes deficient especially technically. :(
    Thank for your help.

Firmware version 2.xxxx is Mk2, so you are good there. I think any of the profiles can be setup to be either Infrastructure or AdHoc, but to connect directly to CF-30 use AdHoc. You need the MEIWDS software.

It would be great if you can get the VDW07 display working with Linux. MEIWDS software only works with Windows XP, so suggest installing it first in WinXP, then study the protocol MEIWDS uses to stream display information to VDW. Maybe Linux or a Linux application has a similar protocol.
