Try this again.... sorry if this is a repost of an old question but search feature not working for me.

My question is there any difference between cf19 mk1 gps and a mk4. I have a mk1 with win xp loaded (kids) and mine mk4 win7. The MK1 gets 4-6 sats in (blue) leadtek and the mk4 gets like 8 or more and mostly green signal strength. Takes minutes for the MK1 to get Lat and Long;MK4 under a minute. My question is should I try and reload drivers or even wipe and repeat(re-image), or is the MK1's GPS almost worthless?

    Thanks

I believe the MK4 started to use a different manufacturer for the GPS receiver itself. The MK1,2 and possibly 3 used the Sony receiver. I can't recall who the manufacturer of the latest is. Driver's are not going to make a difference. Its all in the receiver/antenna setup. I am sure someone will pipe in with the current manufacturer.

Are you talking about a dedicated gps or the gps build into the wwan card?
Do you have the model numbers of these cards?

In general older cards use pure gps signals to get a position. This was much slower as it needed to download the library via a gps signal to know which other satellites where in range.
Newer models use all kinds of assisting technologies. Like wifi signals to get a rough idea of where it is, 20 or more parallel channels to read the signal from the satellites etc.
My first gps, a garmin 45 was almost unusable slow. There were times when I used a set of batteries and it still wouldn't have a fix. The garmin 12xl was much, much better. But these sets where 10-15 years old and I think the gps in your mk1 is much newer. Give me some model numbers and I can tell you more.

Maybe the antenna has come off the card connector anyone know if I can check this easy or will it require completely taking it apart?

Jeff has some info on this as he's currently working with an MK2 GPS on his MK4 trying to get it to work.

    FYI.

    Thanks!

The newer models use a Leadtek GPS.

Was this change also implemented for the CF-31?

I have a hat full of CF-30 GPS units, both Sony and Leadtek. Mostly Sony. I'm using (playing with) three configurations on CF-29 sleds, three engines....three different antennas. The point being that the GPS works best with an antenna that is Matched to the GPS.
This is not from me alone...I read it in a dissertation from an antenna manufacturer but my experimentation validates the claim.

    Jeff...FWIW....

I will reminded again for those who has a CF-19 with an OEM GPS, specially the Sory( I mean sony gps) module. It need a cmos battery back up coz without it at the time you pull it out the main battery. The data save on sram will be lost and at the time you start it again. It will go back to zero again. If you are a tech and know a bit how to read an schem. diag..m on CF-19 or other model that has an option for the said mentioned subject. It uses a VA supply line voltage instead Vc on which it is always be active even if the unit is on off stage to make sure that module is always active.

The duagther board of the CF-19 has a provision for GPS battery back up on it in the form a hirose 2pin connector. I beleive its CN904 see the service tech. manual.
