hi guys it's been awhile (had to rebuild the home computer) i picked up a cf 72vcjuzqm from ebay for $400 worked good for a few weeks with occasional screen freeze and could not ctrl-alt-del would have to hold the power button for four seconds. then one day would only charge the batt and spin up the hard disk and turn the power led on. pulled all components one at a time, no change replaced processor, no change. proc/northbridge/southbridge/video all heat up. pulled another p4 cf72 from ebay $140 which did boot to bios swapped motherboards, it booted to windows for less than 5 min then froze and now no boot again. motherboard part # DL3UP1196AAA wondering what component fails on this board to cause this problem? seems quite common on ebay (plenty sold no boot status) thanks

Don't know the CF-72, but is the system overheating? Any clogged vents/fans/roaches in system? Since you've had the motherboard out you've probably already checked that though.

 You say the newer one is also freezing after about 5 minutes?

Can you try the HD in another system? Maybe the OS is hosed?

Sounds like bios battery issues can cause the problems you are seeing.

well, this cf-72 is up and running it now has been run tested for 62 hours with several thermal cycles, also has modified cooling system with upgraded cpu-1.8ghz. i just wish i knew what electrical event i repaired. so i performed all my same tricks on the other p4 board i have and it is still not working. its been a good experience so far i learned how to desolder chips from a mobo and reinstall them, also finding replacment descrete suface mount parts impossible, kinda feels like back to the future, and this thing is less than 5 yrs old! so i have pictures and will update when problem is resolved or melted down and deluted with pappy's specimens and reborn as a dell---dude!

48user, what exactly did you do to the one you got back running? I've got two in that condition. Thanks!

hi fast-e-nuff!, i can pm you with the details if you ask, but the end result is it died after 74 hours when i pulled the mobo tray to install internal wi-fi, i think the lcd antenna was for wlan(6in long) i removed capacitors and resistors from antenna base and using ohmeter installed jumper center pin of antenna lead to mast, worked good full signal around the house. 10min later it's dead again. if i post what i did here we will never get a untainted one from ebay again, but i will post if i find the exact point of failure. somebody knows what the culprit is, this is a very common problem with the cf-72 p4 mobo's.-good luck
