Ive looked and havent found a list of interchangeable power supplies for our TBs. found a few threads about "hey this specific supply works" and have found mention of certain IBM PSs but no part numbers. Can we get a list goin for what compatible power supply manufacturer and part numbers work with each toughbook?
Im looking into getting a docking station that uses CF-28 style power supplies and if i can get one that will work cheap off of e bay that maybe another OEM (IBM?) that will be better quality than some import.

I have a power supply designed for toughbooks in emergency vehicles. 15.6v and 5 amp. It will need an output cable, but the straight end cables are readily available on fleabay for $5 or less. It has a metal housing with screw tabs to secure it. I am am planning on posting it in the buy sell trade forum soon.

I use a Sony PCGA-AC16V6 most of the time with my CF-28; it's nice & thin (0.7 in x 2.3 in x 5.9 in) to fit in my laptop bag, plus it uses a 2-wire polarized cord which cuts cord bulk literally in half compared to most of the generic power packs with the 3-wire cord.
At my bench I have an IBM FRU 02K6669/PN 02K6657 with the correct end hacksoldered on.
I also have a Panasonic OEM CF-AA1639A that I often use with my CF-VDW07; it's not as wide or as long as my Sony power pack but it's twice as thick.
If you like a super-compact model, The Targus PA-AC-70W-2 measures .5 in x 2 in x 3.5 in. It's an excellent power pack, but like most universal packs, it uses a modular output cord (plugs at each end with separate plug on the end) which some may not like, but I found to be a blessing with a small child who runs around tripping over my cords. Instead of breaking things, it just unplugs.
One caveat tho - If yours comes with the "stubby" AC inlet plug, throw it away and use a regular polarized AC cord with it; they had a recall on the stubby plug thing a few years back cuz dummies were twisting the whole thing on the wall and breaking it open, making exposed contacts on the part still stuck in the wall.

For clarity, which after market AC and DC adapter would work with my CF-18DDAZAMM? I want to run this in my 4x4 and use in the home as well. Then I am going to have to find a decent battery that is not going to break the bank. -

I notice lots of people are using 3.4Amp chargers and indeed my 29 charges fine from the 18s' 3.4Amp. the Lind specified for the 29 is also 3.5amp.
My 29 came with a 5amp charger and I think the oem is 5.something - just wondered if there was any reason not to use a lower amperage to charge with/ run off?
One of my reasons for asking is I did a little red wine induced shopping on ebay and won a new, unused lind car charger for a thinkpad 380/385 which is 3.2amps - was only £1 plus shipping and it had the right plug - some you win -

@ azTony
Buy a lind dc charger and leave in in your vehicle
The 5 to 8 amp units are common and will work fine
Look for the yellow tipped plug type for your cf-18 as the black tipped type are for older Toughbooks
You can't have enough chargers -

Or a 350 watt true sine wave inverter and plug in anything you want(up to max wattage) The 3000 watt inverter is in the old steel Coleman ice-chest with the electric branding irons.

Ive had good luck with Lind products too. I just sent off (today actually) a DC adapter that I got in a package deal when I bought a 28. Even tho I didn't have any proof of purchase they are replacing the adapter for free when some of the plastic that holds the connectors in tightly snapped. Illl be using them for non-oem adapters in the future for sure.

I really like the IBM Lenovo AC/DC Combo Adaptor Model 22P9003! It is 72 Watts, with an AC input of 100-240V / 50-60 HZ or DC input of 13-18VDC. The Output is a nice, Toughbook Friendly, 16V 4.5A(Voltage/Current) and is great for when you are running the Toughbook out of the car!
It will fit the CF-29, CF-50 and others. I really like the idea of just one power brick. I scored a brand new, from the USA, one on eBay for $15 and free shipping. Many are sold without the DC cord, so pay close attention when shopping. -
@ Azrial
I bought 8 a few weeks ago as I was running low on the lind dc type and I liked the idea on versatility of having dc as well as ac in one package
I will not need to stock too many types
IBM adapters are good quality ,I have never had any fail
Good point on reading the fine print when shopping for these as many are missing the dc cord -

Cap, has been promoting the regular IBM type all along
I have received a few used Toughbooks over the years with the IBM adapter and as I said no problems with them
I had the idea on buying the combo type as I noticed Springfield had bought some recently
NBR did a review on these here
And I beleve that Shawn (deere245) was the first here that said that he was using these over a year ago here -
Did someone mention my name????
-
I am also using an IBM since but not a combo. The idea of having a combo is something be the best to offer. I never had a chance to see it personally. Headed for shopping those combo, Lol.
ohlip -
When you look at the price for an AC and a DC adapter and then look at the combo price it is a no brainer to me. Mine is on order...
-
There s a lot of no brainer buyer on ebay specially the toughbook . Don't you know that? See the cf-27 with just added a chinese made cheap plug n' play item and will be sold to 400buck. To be fair enough to the forum member. I am not against the use of USB GPS receiver or the bluetooth Gps. It is the simpliest way to have your unit capable if you can't mod it youself and it is cheap too. For 35buck you can have it. What is the stupidity of some buyer on ebay if they here a toughbook with gps. They think it all the same and bought it for high amount of money. I received a few email from those buyer that bought a toughbook from other seller with either USb Gps or bluetooth and told me how stupid they are when they learned how cheap those USB gps, bluetooth gps and those chinese made plug n' play card. Well! I ask them, how about a can of spray paint on the counter? Lol. Some say "there is no cure for stupidity"
I am now also considering to paint my unit coz there s a lot of stupid buyer on ebay to be fool by this trend. What color do you guys recommend. Pink!..violet!

Of course, as these units (P/N 02K6661 & 02K6746) take an AC Input Power of 100-240 Volts (1.6 A - 0.8 A, 50/60Hz) I put together a cool little adapter kit that will allow me to use most AC power found in the world with this transformer. -
DO NOT BUY THAT ADAPTER!!!! It is a 20v model (IBM uses both 20v and 16v). Every time I have recommended the Thinkpad power supply I have, I think, included the caveat about the existence of the 20v models. Your Toughbook will not like that unit. The ones previously linked in this thread do not specify what the voltage is so if you bought one check it before you use it!

No one has bought these yet.
And as noted earlier: DO NOT BUY these to use with the Toughbooks: excessive voltage (20V vs. 15V for Toughbooks).

@azTony, You should be fine, there was another adapter listed, typed out, not a hot link that was for a IBM that didn't specify voltage.

Come to think of it, I think that it was Capt who gave me the idea. I think that I have been using mine a year as well, I sold a few of my spares that I accumulated in my fervor. Here is the kit I out together out of an International Plug kit at my local Thrift Shop. I think that I paid $4. The DC Car cable is at the bottom and I also carry a USB extender for that problematic occluded side USB on the CF-29.

What's a good substitute for a CF-AA1683A?
I have a CF-51 Duo core. I believe it takes 15.6V 8A.
Thanks -
CF-AA1653A, always remember the last letter "A". If it doesn't have an "A" it has different tip. As suggested also, IBM with 16VDC will be fine.
ohlip -
Really? For the core duo model? Note "83A" not 53A" I got that CF-AA1683A model/part number from a spec sheet that listed core duo and core2duo models I found online. I'm guessing the 1683A is the one for my core duo. I've read that the CF-AA1683AM is interchangeable with the CF-AA1683A.
CF-AA1653A = 15.6V 5.0A used with Pentium M CF-51 Toughbook
CF-AA1683A = 15.6V 8.0A used with dual core CF-51 Toughbook
CF-AA1683AM = 15.6V 8.0A used with Pentium M CF-51 Toughbook
I have an original power adapter for my Pentium M based CF-51. I also have various power adapters for my IBM/Lenovo TPs. I'm thinking all my power adapters don't have enough amperage for the required 8A of the core duo CF-51.
The spec sheets for the Pentium and dual core CF-51's are attached.
