non-standard ram. it should have sodimm (the standard laptop memory)

not easily accessible ram and hard disk drive. It looks like one might have to open the whole thing up and it looks like lifting the keyboard may mean separating the heatsink from the cpu, so really one should reapply the paste. Which is quite ridiculous.

do all toughbooks have these issues?

note- i know of a 3.3v hdd issue but that's prob not a bad issue!

    panasonic CF W2.

"We were a bit unhappy with the proprietary memory module format, which means that if you upgrade to 512MB you will have to pay Panasonic's elevated price"

I am still wondering though. On most panasonic toughbooks, are the HDDs not - on the bottom and easily accessable via a panel. Same question about the RAM position

    It varies I think.

I have had a Y5 and W5 so far, noth Japanese versions. On both, the RAM was a simple panel on underside of laptop. On the Y5, you could also access and change the HDD from a simple hatch under the laptop. However the W5 required you to open the case of the laptop, remove the keybaord etc in order to access the HDD.

CF-71 is a piece of cake. Mine was built in 1997, so 10 years old now. I guess it qualifies as an 'old bugger' :D

RAM and HDD have both been upgraded multiple times. Normal, standard laptop components, nothing proprietary. Both very easy to get to as well. For the HDD, you insert a tool into a slot on the left side of the notebook and the 'palm rest' area pops up exposing the HDD. Very easy to swap. Memory accessible from a panel on the underside, just one or two screws, easy.

Since these toughbooks are popular with military and government, I'd be very surprised if the HDD wasn't very easily removable. Usually, that's a requirement in that market sector.

my mistake, ram is easily accessible. i half think it's proprietary though.

proprietary ram and not easy to find hdd.

    a bit of a nuisance
