The mounts for the 27 will work with a 28 if you are willing to do some cutting. The connector is identical, but the retainer tabs are different up front, and must be cut to hold the book in place.

I think somebody posted pictures of their cuts.

Be prepared radiogeek if that seller is frankscs and is selling them for 69.99 for four of them. I bought a set and when they arrived it took me three hours to straighten out all the bent connectors and pins etc.. The price is right and they do work but his packaging skills need work. There was plenty of packing material but he had them all lined up on end one after the other and they must have been banging around during shipping. Speaking of these docks according to the kodiak website it says that it is supposed to supply the 15.? volts for battery charging is there an internal power supply that is supposed to be inside the dock? If anyone knows please let me know cause none of these have one if it supposed to have one in it.

I thought the Kodiak mounts use an external converter (which never seems to be included with the mount on ebay). BUT.. people have reported success running their toughbooks right off the vehicle's alternator output, so you might want to explore that

The kodiak mounts that I got are the ones that have all the buttons on the front and are about the same thickness as the laptop itself. It appears as though from what I have read that it should have some type of power supply inside but I am not sure.

You can swap out the lock... That's not a problem. (I took the one out of mine!) OR... You can take it to a locksmith to be rekeyed. I think a new lock would be a better choice though.

That is the same guy I got mine from and Toughbook is right you can easily replace the lock just make sure when you go to the locksmith he takes notice that it is a three position lock or you will make another trip back to get the right lock. Ask me how I know.LOL. I paid 22.00USD for my lock but I think his price was a bit steep.

Yup...they will fit..I modded one to fit my 28.. I have pics...
13.8 v from your vehicle will run the laptop.. won't be enough to charge the battery.
The lock can be replaced.. a 7/8 socket will fit ..provided you bend the lip out a tad ...
If it's unlocked..you do not need the key to mount the laptop..the key is for locking it in place.

Kyote, did your dock have some kind of internal power supply to step up the voltage to the 15.6 for battery charging? I got 4 of them and not one of them has what appears to be needed for this. I looked on the kodiak site and it clearly states that one of the output voltages is supposed to be 15.6 volts.

no..just has the 4 pin Molex connector...(same type as on an IDE hard drive....)
Pin out only requires 12v constant , 12v switched, and Ground. extra pin is a Trigger switch for external accessories..
Thats from the CF-27, 28 manual.
Heres the link to the wiring schematic..

    http://kodiakmobile.com/specs/SW272834.pdf

According to the manual... when the Power LED is on..it's Charging the battery... ( looks.. yep..it's green..)
Low volt light is off.. am going to let it run for a while and see if the battery light will stay green..

the seller accepted my ofer for $24.00 for one of the docking stations. I did not need four, Like i said I think the shipping is hefty, but for 59 bucks if it wouks i dont think it was too step. I can fab a floor mount for my truck, it wont be fancy but it will work for what i need.

Looks like to me that it has a built in voltage regulator... It says output voltages of 12, 15 & 5... which are on the back connector but only 12v in...

Thats what I was thinking since I had the bottom plate off of mine and didn't see any power supply inside of any kind. I can only assume as I didn't look closely at the board that it must have a step up transformer or regulator built in. So I suppose that answers my question of whether or not it will charge the battery.

Hmmmm... I'll have to check the key number on mine to see if you can match it up. The guy who gave me mine was a retired cop who is now a locksmith. He said he was having trouble finding the blanks. You can put me in for on if I am in time to get one.

I too wouldnt mind a key, but that being said for those of you who have replaced the locks do they look stock and do they function well? I know one of you guys said it was a three position lock, but i dont have a local locksmith could you post exactly what you bought so i can look on the net for one?

    thanks

I got an exact replacement for mine, and looks stock with the exception of looking new.

I went to the locksmith, handed him the lock, and had a new one paid for in 3 minutes.

I modded a port replicator for a 27 (cf-veb272) to go in a vehicle, for use with a 28. Those pre made mounts are just so big & bulky. For the stock replicator to work, it or the computer had to be slightly modded. Although if the 28 didn't have the corner pieces made for the carry strap, it would have fit right in. Just an idea if you don't like the bulky mounts.

Radio, All it is is a three position 7/8th's barrel keyed cam lock. If you look on ebay at the kodiak docks you will see what the front of the lock looks like. Other than that it is simply known as a 7/8ths lock with a barrel key from what my local locksmith said. Just take yours to a locksmith and have him match it up to one.

Hey guys....All kodiak keys ARE the same....As long as it is a barrel key, if my memory serves me correct, the nimber stamped on the key should start with "PL..." and say on it "Don't Duplicate" somewhere on it also.... LEDCO mounts are the same way, the uses the same key number, and stamped "Don't Duplicate" on it.... If you have a stubborn lock cylinder, sometimes you have to grind off the outer "tang" and make an adjustment to the locking tab inside the dock with a pair of medium pliers or medium needle nose.. I had to doo that to a fleet of 25 squads when they went from cf28's to cf29's..... Kodiak called it "A simple lock adjustment" and it worked fine to this day...so anybody who has an "origional" lock cylinder on a Kodiak that is requesting a key, please PM me and I will see what I can do for you...

Its funny how things work. When in Pacific Northwest I sometimes do work for a company that outfits police cruisers with the extra goodies including Kodiak docking stations for Toughbooks.

Something that makes me sick to this day is that before I was into toughbooks I watched them send about 15 cf-27 docking stations to the scrap yard:cry:

Last time I was up a few of the depts were getting ready to move to CF-18s...maybe they will have some 28 and 29 docking stations come through.

No promises...but I will get in touch with them and do my best to find out if they have anything floating around.
